History

This article analyzes gender perspectives at two secondary
schools in Nsukka, Nigeria. It analyzes gender-role changes
or perceptions of change based on students’ reported interactions in formal education settings. It summarizes gender issues under students’ perceptions of gender roles, norms, and practices in relation to themselves, their peer group, and their perceptions of generational change compared with those of their parents and grandparents. These perceptions demonstrate a pattern of gender roles shaped by Western Judeo-Christian doctrine within the formal education curriculum, minimal inclusion of local history or cultural content,and loss of indigenous knowledge and practices. Gender-role change is one aspect of a general Westernizing effect of formal models of Western education on indigenous cultures.

Issues in African Political Economies draws together nineteen essays that detail local and regional political economies in Africa by describing case studies squarely situated within the global context. The varied perspectives from a range of academic fields speak to the complex layers and configurations of local, national, and global political and economic systems. These authors identify economic hardships and political uncertainties, providing insightful critiques and solutions based on grounded theory and solid documentation of current conditions. Theme: Africa and the Diaspora: Intersectionality and Interconnections The Mid-America Alliance for African Studies (MAAAS) and the African and African American Studies Program, Iowa State University, invite scholars to submit conference papers and full panel proposals for the 2018 conference on Africana Studies. The goal of this conference is to create an interdisciplinary dialogue on the history, contemporary status, and future configurations within the intersectionalities and interconnections of Africa and the Diaspora. Intersectionality presents its various configurations and interconnections across the continent and around the world as a concept, " linking contemporary politics with postmodern theory. In mapping the intersections of race and gender, the concept does engage dominant assumptions that race and gender are essentially separate categories….suggesting a methodology that will ultimately disrupt the tendencies to see race and gender as exclusive or separable….the concept [intersectionality] can and should be expanded by factoring in issues such as class, sexual orientation, age, [colonialism], and color " (Crenshaw, 1991, p.1244-45N9). These intersectionalities of identity interplay within precolonial, colonial, and neo-colonial constructs that develop unique and often conflicting interconnections. Scholars are welcome to submit papers on a range of areas such as cultural, feminist, Pan African, and postcolonial studies. All interdisciplinary and traditional disciplines from the Arts, Humanities, Math, Sciences, Social Sciences, etc are welcome. This conference provides a venue to discuss intersectionality's role in understanding Africa and the Diaspora and the interconnections across its people, places, history, present, and future. We invite proposals that address topics beyond the organizing theme as well. This handbook explores the evolution of African education in historical perspectives as well as the development within its three systems–Indigenous, Islamic, and Western education models—and how African societies have maintained and changed their approaches to education within and across these systems. African education continues to find itself at once preserving its knowledge, while integrating Islamic and Western aspects in order to compete within this global reality. Contributors take up issues and themes of the positioning, resistance, accommodation, and transformations of indigenous education in relationship to the introduction of Islamic and later Western education. Issues and themes raised acknowledge the contemporary development and positioning of indigenous education within African societies and provide understanding of how indigenous education works within individual societies and national frameworks as an essential part of African contemporary society.
