It commences with a brief review of the literature on social network analysis, which provides the foundation for exploration of policy networks. Social network analysis is utilized to analyze network relationships and explain the pattern and consequences of these relationships. Based on centrality and other network attributes, the analysis highlights the key influencers in the tourism data ecosystem examined, and suggests that initial steps towards implementing a tourism open data policy should focus on opening up tourism asset data, and relaxing current restrictive data exchange practices. The agency with responsibility for collecting and disseminating tourism asset data, is well positioned to become the data broker in an emergent tourism open data ecosystem.

The twin-island republic is identified as a late entrant in the tourism and hospitality business, but the need for a well-trained human resource base was identified early. A master plan for tourism was drafted which identified education as an important component of tourism development. Model concepts such as “Getting Industry into Education” (GIE) and “Getting Education into Industry” (GEI) included a tourism awareness component and the development of industry standards, respectively. The author also examines tourism and hospitality programmes and training needs at the bachelor's and master's degree levels. The chapter concludes that a new model for tourism and hospitality education in Trinidad and Tobago has evolved in accordance with the Tourism Master Plan.

The first part of the book (chapters 2-5) is about resources for islands, including transport and hospitality, and demand for islands. This part addresses the core resources of tourism products and services to suggest principles and practices to manage these in island environments. The second part (chapters 6-8) concerns tourism policy, planning and development to guide appropriate forms of tourism development that will create benefit for islanders. The third part (chapters 9-11) deals with tourism marketing and management's role in exploring new strategies that can be adopted for successful island tourism management. The volume also includes a review, in chapter 12, of the network methodological approach for understanding island tourism and suggests that a new approach is needed to develop island tourism research.

However, although its importance has long been recognized, the fragmentation within the sector, largely as a result of it being comprised of small and medium sized businesses, makes understanding knowledge management challenging. This book applies knowledge management and social network theories to the business of tourism to shed light on successful operations of tourism knowledge networks. It contributes specifically to understanding a network perspective of the tourism sector, the information needs of tourism businesses, social network dynamics of tourism business operation, knowledge flows within the tourism sector and the transformation of the tourism sector through knowledge networks.
