The traditional understanding is that Elijah ascended to heaven in a whirlwind, but a close exami... more The traditional understanding is that Elijah ascended to heaven in a whirlwind, but a close examination of the text suggests only that he was transported to some other location on earth where he lived out the rest of his life in quiet retirement, save for one exceptional instance when he broke his silence with a letter. Both ancient Jews and Christians interpreted the text this way, and how one understands the narrative (bodily assumption to heaven versus local translation) matters because it has tremendous ramifications for his theology.
