Public opinion has primarily been centred on the binary ideological inclinations of these two camps. Thus, social interaction and personal dispositions have been subverted as far as the conceptualisation of mass media and its role and effects on society is concerned. Social media networking platforms, such as Facebook and WhatsApp, have ushered a plethora of spaces and contexts for studying how audiences create meaning and influence each other in the interpretation of information distributed by mass media entities. This is a qualitative research aimed at exploring the dialogic nature of mass communication with particular attention being paid to the notions of interaction and negotiation of meaning between mass media in Zimbabwe and the audience/society in a news website. The research is underpinned by Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and the Social Constructionist Theory. Critical Discourse Analysis on the one hand is used to explore ideological interaction occurring between mass media and its audience in the news website comments section. The Social Constructionist Theory on the other hand is used to explore how online communication as both a social practice and construct is both modelled and remodelled by society through processes of co-production and negotiation of meaning. Thus, the relationship between mass media and society in this research is treated as a triadic reciprocal process.

The growth of the economy of Zimbabwe is dependent on the development of a manpower that is highly skilled in high value skills such as software, engineering and other science related areas of expertise. Literacy in the 21 st Century is a lot different from what it implied in the 20 th Century. The imperative to be financially literate and computer literate is now all encompassing meaning that it now requires every student going through our education system to be empowered with this quintessential knowledge. The programme of infusing STEM objectives into the education system needs to expand from being just an initiative aimed at A' Level students to being a programme directed at all levels of the national education spectrum. Children need to be infused with these critical skills in STEM from as early as Primary school. Incentive for studying sciences needs to proliferate to all sections of the education divide such that it can promote a culture of research and innovation. Basic programming skills need to seize to be a preserve of Higher education institutions and need to be accessible as early on as Primary school. Children need to be educated on these fundamentals so that they can develop a mindset that .understands that failure is acceptable, and that innovation is important to pursue even though it can be coupled with multiple instances of failure.
