The fine, sophisticated structure and the poetic qualities suggest that the song may have literary rather than folklore origins – and it is in fact a folklorized poem by Avrom Reyzen, first published in 1902, followed by a stellar career in the United States. e paper follows the adventurous path of the poem, from the tradition of Talmud learning to “high” culture and then to the folklore repertoire.

This paper focuses on Flaubert's descriptions regarding the cap of the young Bovary, Emma and Bovary's wedding cake and the town hall of Yonville; all these are the emblems of bad taste, the philistine ideal of happiness and the artificial sublimeness of the public space. These descriptions raise further questions in connection to the narrator's special point of view, their aims and position as well as the function of these segments. From a textual standpoint, these elements are also paralleled and partially interwoven with a kind of cataloging or listing type of text formation. I contend that they are in fact parodical in quality and that the end effects result in a mockery of the conventions of narration which were about to become established at the time: instead of being conventional, the descriptions of Madame Bovary are ironically counter-conventional.

The topics and thoughts expressed in these studies were originally explored during a conference session held at the AILC Vienna Congress in 2016. While Central and Eastern Europe’s participation in the world of comparative studies has formed a core element for both the research group’s interest and the Vienna session, this field has been expanded to discuss Central and Eastern European literatures within the context of international comparative studies as well as the migration (emigration) of these literatures. After presenting the four papers included in the 2017 issue of Hungarian Cultural Studies, the Guest Editors provide a brief preview of the next four papers to be published in the journal’s 2018 issue.

Sőt ezek a társaságok egyre konzervatívabbakká váltak, zártabbakká és ellenségesebbekké a modern irodalommal szemben, és szoros kapcsolatba kerül-tek a politikával. a tanulmány erről a jelenségről ad vázlatos képet, a résztvevők fő indí-tékait és lépéseit próbálja feltárni.
Disfunctionality/Ornamental Functionality: Literary Societies in the Beginning of the 20th Century
literary societies formed in Hungary in the 19th century played a very important role in organizing and stimulating (partly simulating) literary life in Hungary. among their functions there was the promotion of publications, forming the canon through prizes and awards, vitalization of critical life, creating space for literary discussions. For the beginning of the 20th century, however, most of these functions were taken over by a normalizing development of the literary field (a market, a public sphere, an autonomous structure of literary magazines and publication, etc.) - so that the new generation of the actors did not feel it neither necessary nor comfortable to take part in the older organizations. Moreover, these societies became more and more conservative, closed and hostile towards the modern literatures, and also had close ties with politics. The study gives a sketch of this phenomenon, trying to explore the main motives and steps of the parties involved.
