The port harbors very large ships never seen before in the area. These new activities result in noise levels not experienced before by port users as well as neighbouring populations. This work builds on prior surveys, measurements and noise mapping done in the Port of Tripoli and analyses recent field measurements performed in the port of Beirut

Until now a specific approach for harbour noise is still missing and this complicates the task of analysing and assessing the acoustic impact of ports on exposed population. The performed study confirmed the need to upgrade the current way. Sources overlapping, directivity ignorance, seasonality and day alternation, sources mix are as many as issues that requires new, more effective, techniques to characterize port noise. With regard to the measures, contemporary close and remote measures are to be made; specific measures designed to characterize the sources are needed (including intensimetric measurements and acoustic cameras); protracted and detailed measurement campaigns are needed. Concerning the port noise modelling, two different approaches are possible. Either every single source and the geometry of the port area are characterized, and then modelled by ray tracing according to the usual method. Or measures are taken on the harbour perimeter, assigning then attempt values to the sound power level of the sources with a "try and correct" technique, until the correct values are determined and the acoustic field is accurately described

Beam-steering antennas are the ideal solution for a variety of system applications; it is mostly achieved using phased arrays, where phase shifters are used to control the main-beam. In this paper, the pin-diode phase shifters were considered. ”ON” and ”OFF” states provide phase shift due to different current paths. The main beam direction can be switched between the angles of 25 degrees with a 3dB beamwidth of 23 degrees. The metamaterial structure is composed of 8x8 mm on Rogers RT/duroid 5880 with 0. 254mm thickness and dielectric constant of 2.2. The proposed phase array antenna has four microstrip patch with a thickness of 0. 0175mm printed on the same Rogers RT-duroid substrate with a dielectric constant of 2.2 with dimensions of 5.40 mm x3.94 mm. The phased array antenna without metamaterial structure presented a directivity of 14. 8dBi.Gain increase to 16. 6dBi upon placing the metamaterial structure at a distance 24. 3mm.

This receiver is designed to be used in the CATV distribution network FTTX application. The MMIC portion is made of GaAs PHEMT, it consists of two amplification push pull stages separated by a voltage controlled variable attenuator stage. Responsivity of 27dBA/W with a gain variation of up to 20dB has been achieved. The circuit consumes less than 2Watts, the area is 3 mm2 and has packaged in a low cost 28 pin leedless package.

The DNG shape includes C and U resonators on one side of dielectric medium and a wire on other side. The Scattering parameters as well as permittivity, permeability and refractive index are determined from the simulated Simulations of DNG structure using Computer simulation technology (CST) in microwave studio (MWS). For verification of negative values of structure’s parameter, MATLAB was used. This is a novel and promising design approach in the world of electromagnetics due to its simplicity, scalability and characteristics of double-negative material.

"Management of Environmental Sustainability of Port Areas" Abstract: Environmental Noise in the Port of Tripoli - Lebanon and its surrounding area has been recently monitored for over one year. Short-duration measurements have been taken in various locations of the Port. Surveys of port visitors, ship workers and port workers were also conducted. The monitoring has targeted hereafter the noise-related activities of the Port, mainly: loading of metal scrap and loading of cargos which are generally accompanied by vehicles mobility especially in the Port primary quays. The data has been loaded into the Dutch Standard Calculation Method sheet for Road Traffic Noise in order to develop a comparative model. Results of Equivalent noise levels generated from the two most noise intense Port activities, with and without vehicles contribution, was elaborated. Mitigation measures for vehicles mobility are recommended. The interventions allow the reduction of the average sound pressure level generated due to vehicles mobility related to loading of scrap or loading of cargos.

An antibiogram is a test of the sensitivity of a microorganism to given antibiotics. Reading an interpretation of the antibiogram results is usually performed manually, which leads to human errors and a great waste of time. There are few automated devices that reads and interprets antibiograms but they are expensive and costly to run. This paper aimed to present a prototype that reads and interprets antibiograms. In this paper, we show the algorithm of detection and interpretation using the recent image processing techniques. The two principle techniques used for circles detection are the Circular Hough Transform (CHT) and the Pixel Value Checking (PVC).

Electrocardiogram (ECG) and simple blood testing could diagnose the causes of heart failure. ECG records the electrical activities of the heart by showing waveform complexes called PQRST representing the electric serial events of polarization, depolarization and repolarization processes that take place in the heart per heartbeat. The ST segment of the PQRST complex is a phase of ventricular repolarization and that is of great importance in cardiac failure diagnosis. In cases of certain heart conditions and or failure, this ST segment may rise above or decline below a reference line. Besides ECG recording, a blood test of a protein called Troponin that is released in ng/I by the heart muscles becomes elevated in the blood stream in response to MI's, Pectoris angina, and/or coronary ischemia or other related medical conditions. Both ECG recording and Troponin testing woul...

The Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) community recognizes the need for systems that make BCI more user-friendly, real-time, manageable and suited for people that are not forced to use them, like clinical patients, and those who are disabled.During this project, we analyzed Electroencephalography signals obtained by Neurosky headset from the brain, acquired by electrode FP1 on the frontal lobe and processed the signals to identify features that subjects were seeing. The signals’ features were analyzed for the purpose to link them to what the subject were seeing.

It causes unprovoked, recurrent seizures. A seizure is a sudden rush of electrical activity in the brain. Being in the wrong place and time may cause huge harm to epileptic patients who lose awareness during the seizure. Unfortunately, epilepsy does not have a treatment yet. Seizures may attack anytime and anywhere and patients are unable to know when a seizure can occur. The goal of this work is to develop a system that can alert patients before a seizure attacks. This will help them to prepare a safe environment as an early precaution. We used Neural Network and ANFIS (adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system) for processing and analyzing electroencephalogram (EEG) signals of normal patients versus epileptic patients and verified seizure starting point.
