While there is still a strong passion and interest for traditional crafts, many of the designs no... more While there is still a strong passion and interest for traditional crafts, many of the designs now need to be adapted to comply with the contemporary rules and regulations, and additional modifications are required to meet modern expectations, in areas ranging from comfort to safety; hence the need for modern replicas. In order to ascertain the constraints on modern replicas, a redesign of a Dark Harbor 17.5 will be proposed. First, an initial design evaluation will be performed to assess the characteristic of the original yacht, regarding hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, structural arrangement and stability. Modifications in accordance with regulations and owner’s requirements will then be implemented to create a modern replica suited to today’s market. Finally, the new design will be compared to the original one, allowing to evaluate the challenges of design modernization and the impact of contemporary requirements on a traditional design.

The intensive studies of those vessels before aimed to improve the performance of conventional ferries and also to fulfill technical and environmental issues left by the HSC crafts. They operate at the Froude number range of 0.55 to 0.80 which is beyond the hump speed. In fact, they need a high engine power to maintain their operation speeds. The present project is to find the minimum resistance due to the proper dimension of the ship. A base ship of 250 passengers is designed in this study. The variation of seat configurations and passenger distributions, applied in this task, will end-up with the variation of the ship dimensions. Furthermore, those dimensions will affect the performance of the resistance and other ship design parameters. The excel solver is used to solve the problem to find the minimum resistance with the constraints of stability and sea keeping of the ship. The results will be presented and provided for the future study of hull shape optimization, particularly to find the best design of hull form with the minimum power.
