This study is conducted to determine how impactful is performance appraisal feedback on performance management among academics of higher education institutions in Nigeria could be. The study adopted cross sectional survey research design where 216 valid responses generated from the structured questionnaires administered served as study sample and thus used for analyzing data. 0.957 and 0.962 were respectively found as coefficient values using Composite Reliability. Partial-least square (PLS SEM) was used to analyze data. Findings suggest performance appraisal feedback supports performance management among academics for the sampled higher education institution. It was therefore recommended among others that; academics should be carried on board on the goals of the institution's performance management system and the mechanism for giving feedback be clear.

Institutional development pursuing a robust quality assurance system in every process of execution should be the main objective of every higher educational institution's performance management system. Student's appraisal of academic' performance is a foremost element of determining performance in some countries. However, academics seem critical to students' participation in their performance management relating to teaching performance and quality. The purpose of this study is to determine how impactful can students' participation in academics' performance management on quality assurance could be in Nigeria's higher education institutions. In this cross-sectional survey, questionnaires were employed to gather data from participants. Partial-least square (PLS SEM) was used in analyzing gathered data. The study found the existence of significant relationship between Performance management and quality assurance as well as students' participation and quality assurance. A significant finding of this study is that students' participation moderates the relationship of performance management and quality assurance. Research suggests that involving students in academics performance management can make a significant impact towards achieving quality assurance. Consequently, the study recommended that management of higher education institutions should ensure that academics see students as partners in progress and should be involved in academics' performance management towards attaining better and proficient academics as well as quality education.

Extant literature on the study's variables were reviewed under conceptual and theoretical frameworks and, empirical review. The research work was anchored on Equity Theory. Survey research design was employed in conducting the study. The population of the study was 246. Krejcie and Morgan (1970) was used to determine and arrive at a 148 and to avoid low response rate from disobliging respondents, 40% was added. PLS SEM was employed analyze data. Findings revealed that there is a positive relationship between organizational politics and performance management system effectiveness in tertiary institution under study. Organizational fairness and performance management system effectiveness has no direct relationship as demonstrated by the findings of the study. The study concluded distributive fairness moderated the relationship between performance management system effectiveness and organizational politics. Academics participation in performance management system policy formulation in the institution under study is one of the recommendations the study offered.

Previous literature has indicated the impacts of organizational fairness, organizational politics, transactional leadership and employee's participation on performance appraisal (PA). The objective of this study is to confirm the validity and reliability of the research instruments in examining the relationships between organizational fairness, Politics, transactional leadership, and employees' participation on EPA among academics in Nigeria. A survey method was employed, and a total of 40 questionnaires set was distributed to respondents via convenience sampling. Results confirmed the validity and reliability of the instruments adapted.

Studies suggest that elements such as organizational fairness, organizational politics, and leadership style may contribute to the EPA. Regardless of the evidence of research on these issues, there is paucity of research linking the impact of distributive fairness on the EPA. Moreover, prior studies, similar to this, have reported mixed findings. Accordingly, this study proposes the moderating role of employee participation in the relationship between distributive fairness and the EPA.

A survey technique was used to administer 518 surveys to academics in public Polytechnics and Colleges of Education (COEs) in North-East and North-West Nigeria. Preliminary screening and cleaning of data were performed in an effort to observe the expectations of multivariate analysis. Thus, Statistical analyses of missing data as well as an evaluation of univariate and multivariate outliers was done using SSPSS version 23. Result indicates that further analysis can be carried out as the data fulfill the basic requirements for that purpose.

This study quantitatively examines and explores a small sample of data on the relationship between organisational politics and performance managementsystems in Nigeria. Survey method was adopted to collect from a higher education institution exploiting purposive convenience sampling technique. Validity and reliability of the instrument were examined through panel of experts and a small sample of respondents. Data was analysed using PLS 3. Results confirmed the validity and reliability of the instrument adapted in the pilot study. A larger sample size was recommended for future study to empirically determine relationship among constructs.

For this reason, further contributions to the body of knowledge in this area by attempting investigate the relevance of students in assessing academics’ performance especially professional competences become imperative. To achieve the objective of this study therefore, a pilot study was conducted which this paper reports the results. Polytechnics are one of the higher education institutions (HEIs) in Nigeria, yet, they are not incorporated by scholars in their studies on HEIs, particularly, in Nigeria. This paper presents a study on how polytechnics lecturers perceive how certain Human Resource (HR) practices as recognized by Boselie et al (2005) found to be well observed within a Nigerian Polytechnic impact on their performances and then linking them to lecturer competencies recognized by Robbins et al (2007) and Molefe (2010). Therefore, the research inquires among others essentially; connection between HR practices and perceived performances of lecturers in Nigerian polytechnics. The study employed qualitative research methods in its investigation, engaging semi structured interviews, and then, thematic analysis to analyze data collected. The study revealed that, all the HR practices investigated are well observed in the institution and have impact on the performances of lecturers. Finally, it was established while lecturers wholly embraced the HR practices, they are critical of the reward systems and employees' appraisal practices and therefore need to be enhanced to further improve performances. The main conclusions drawn from this study are; apart from enhancing the some HR practices identified, students should be involved to a certain extent, in appraising lecturers' proficiencies, and also, create an atmosphere for better student-lecturer relations for the attainment of overall organizational objectives.

The aim is to know if there is any connection between HR practice of training and development on the perceived performances of lecturers in the Polytechnic and; more precisely, the degree to which lecturers recognize training and development improving performances on the job? Consequently, the study engages case study technique using Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, Nigeria to achieve its objective. The study reveals that there is in place a sound on the job and off the job training and development policy in the institution even though there are reservations on decisions by management on whom are sent on training and in what area particularly overseas training. That notwithstanding, it is obvious from the study that the human resource (HR) practice of training and development has impact on lecturers performances as their skills and knowledge are being updated to meet up with present day challenges. Finally, the study recommends to the management of the polytechnic under study to consider holistic implementation of this practice so that the challenges associated with observing it as found out by this study are addressed especially those to be trained and the mode to be engaged.

Hence effective appraisal of performances for academics becomes very critical towards the objectives for the establishment of HEIs. Besides, boosting employee performance is the central purpose of any appraisal policy in organizations. However, performance appraisal (PA) is in most instances observed to be a routine activity that consume school leaders and academic staff’s time in most institutions. For instance, there are indications that performance appraisal procedures and criteria are not well observed aside being universally used to improve employee performance which affects its effectiveness in organizations especially educational institutions. For that reason, to add to the body of literature, this paper strives to achieve two objectives. First, it aims to present discussion on lecturer leadership and fairness perceptions of performance appraisal drawn from literature. Second, to present a conceptual framework that shows the relationships of the study variables. It is expected this will propel empirical study using the framework. This is because enhancing employee performance is the fundamental aim of any appraisal policy in organizations. Thus, the EPA as an essential human resource management (HRM) practice in the 21st Century is important because will assist organizations in achieving effectiveness and competitiveness. Employee participation may lead to EPA. This paper conceptualizes the role of employee participation in EPA. It is suggested that further studies which are empirical in nature should be carried out to see how employee participation could lead to EPA.
