Nations cooperated with supranational groups when deciding what to do with football operations in these crises except during the COVID-19 pandemic when the "Ostrich Alliance" viewed it as interference with their sovereignty.

Athlete activism is powerful because of the natural exposure that sport as big business consistently offers. Sport also affords a natural opportunity for high-profile athletes, whose identities cross intersectional lines of race, ethnicity, class, and gender, to work together and to magnify their message in global stadiums and arenas to diverse audiences. By protesting economic, legal, and cultural disparities that exist throughout society, athlete activism shows the value of collective action by prominent figures such as international women’s soccer players in the fight for equal treatment, Venus Williams ahead of Wimbledon, and Colin Kaepernick, the Minnesota Lynx, Tommie Smith and John Carlos among others who protest police brutality and racism towards blacks.

It argues between 1960 to 2005 conservative-leaning capitalists and politicians redefined mainstream soccer as a commercial investment aimed not to truly popularize the international sport in the United States, but to Americanize it with the mindset of producing capital for them. For example: Alan Rothenberg, a lawyer who conducted the soccer tournament in the 1984 Olympics and coordinated the 1994 World Cup in the United States, established the most recent professional soccer league, Major League Soccer, as a single-entity to promote more revenue earning for the investors. Between 2002 and 2005, MLS considered Edmond, Oklahoma, as a potential new location for an expansion team with a desire to promote soccer in the area and capitalize on the strong youth presence of the sport. Even though the attempt failed, the Oklah...

Third, the jointly hosted 2002 world Cup—hosted with longtime rival and former colonizer Japan—displayed a renewed nationalism through sport, as the Korean team performed admirably in the grandiose football tournament. The fourth mega-event, the 2018 winter olympics, had not yet taken place when the book was published; therefore, the commentary about potential legacies presented in the book are both speculative and optimistic. This brings up some of the deficiencies in MegaEvents and MegaAmbitions. As two of the three authors are South Korean, there may exist a partial bias. In general, this bias tends not to be an issue, except in one notable circumstance. Prior to the 1988 Seoul olympic Games, there was a forced eviction of slum residents in the Korean capital, as they were encroaching on the facilities and tourist hubs associated wit...
