Buddhist studies in the digital age is faced with immense opportunities, challenges, and problems both old and new. By using the word ‘Buddhology’, we encourage readers to think of not only text-based Buddhist studies but a cross-disciplinary field where art, architecture, and material culture are an integral part of the term in question.

In this issue’s ‘China Connections’, we invite readers to look at the exciting development of digital Buddhology in present-day China. Highlighted here are recent digitization projects by Peking University, Zhejiang University, and the research institutes at the world heritage sites of Dunhuang, Yungang, Longmen, and Dazu, some involving international collaborations such as with the Getty Center and Harvard University.

The "Digital Heritage and Innovative Collaborations" workshop strives to explore the tangible/intangible aspects of digital heritage conservation. It further discusses collaborative opportunities to conduct the high-resolution site survey for scholars and institutions at local authorities. For preserving and making sustainable of the tangible cultural heritage, three-dimensional models and other innovative perspectives are discussed. For extending the established results and making the digital resources available to broader audiences, the workshop will further explore interactive info-motion interface and apply the knowledge of digital heritage to STEM education. The workshop expects to bridge the platform for archeology, computer graphics, and interactive info-motion design. Digital sculpting, interactive info-motion and VR will be the core techniques to explore the narrative of digital heritage conservation. For further protecting, educating and consolidating "building dwelling thinking" through digital heritage preservation, the workshop helps to preserve the digital humanity, and reach out to museum staffs and academia. By the joint effort of global institutions and local authorities, the project will also help to foster and enhance the mutual understanding through intercultural collaborations.

The paper is based on the author's pedagogic approach to deliver to art school students about sculpture-based, 3D facial animation techniques. To assist students from diverse design disciplines and stimulate students' awareness of cross-disciplinary flexibility between designer, artist and art school students, experimental methods of narration are introduced to students. To balance between creation and reflection, Continental Aesthetics is also utilized to develop students' critical thinking. Nowadays, digital art education faces opportunities and challenges: online tutorials, user forums, know-how texts, …, etc. Educators are obliged to see insights beyond technical level. How to guide the college students to create digital art work that cross over art, design, techniques and personal styles, becomes the ultimate challenge. In this paper, Continental Aesthetics theory is used to examine students' learning process, reflect pedagogic approaches, and explore fluidity of digital sculpturing education, such as definition, shifting meaning, and aesthetic possibility.

The paper explores the tangible and intangible aspects of digital heritage in conservation, and the utilization of computer graphics technology to broaden the format of narrative and messaging of cultural heritage preservation. Digital sculpting and projection mapping are the main technical aspects to explore the story of digital heritage for further protecting, educating and consolidating "building dwelling thinking" through digital heritage preservation.

In this on-going project entitled “Body As Echoes” (BAE), literature review, field research, and interviews of the practitioners are utilized to examine the iconography, conservation and digital heritage imaging of Buddhist deities in the cave-temple complexes of China. Archives, image sequences, point cloud visualizations, 3D models and web-based interactive navigations are accumulated from the various cave-temple complexes in China (Dazu Rock Carvings, Maijishan cliff grottos, Huang Ze Temple, Thousand-Buddha Cliff, Dun Huang Cave paintings) to conduct the researches. The intangible aspect of the project includes the cultural meaning, interconnections between the depicted deities, accentuation of the dynamism of time and change, and the new media narrative in the digital space nowadays. Buddhism and its path from India, China to Japan symbolize the dissemination of intercultural activities along the Silk Road. Different geo-locations in China, on the other hand, are connected by c...
