We used 48 rats in the study. Diabetes was induced in 24 rats using streptozotocin; the remaining 24 healthy untreated rats served as controls. Twelve of the diabetic rats and 12 of the healthy rats were treated with AP for 3 days before surgery. Bilateral bone defects were created in the mandible of all animals. ABS was applied to the defects on the left sides of the mandibles, while nothing was applied to the right sides. Animals were sacrificed on days 7 and 14 after operation and examined for histopathology and by stereology. The volume of newly formed bone was significantly less in the diabetic rats on both days 7 and 14. Local administration of ABS significantly increased the mean volume of newly formed bone in both diabetic and nondiabetic rats at days 7 and 14. No significant difference in new bone formation was found between AP ...

In the present study, we evaluated immediate and delayed effects of 4 hemostatic agents (oxidized regenerated cellulose, 5% colloid silver-added gelatine sponge, bovine collagen, bone wax) on peripheral nerve function. A total of 25 rat sciatic nerves were prepared, and the amplitudes were recorded with a physiological data acquisition system. Animals were randomly assigned to 5 groups: control, oxidized regenerated cellulose, gelatine sponge, bone wax, and bovine collagen. The first hour records are defined as immediate effects of these hemostatic agents on nerve function. The animals were then allowed to recover for 4 weeks. At the end of this period, the same surgical and recording procedures were performed. These final records are defined as delayed effects of hemostatic agents on nerve function. According to nerve conduction velocity (NCV) and compound action potential (CAP) values of the experimental groups, early and delayed effects of each hemostatic agent were statistically compared with Bonferroni corrected test (P < .05). Statistically, NCV was significantly reduced, and the CAP was significantly increased 1 hour after surgery (P < .05) in the group of oxidized regenerated cellulose. However, there were no significant differences after 4 weeks compared with the first records. In the gelatine sponge group, CAP was significantly increased 4 weeks after the application. In the bovine collagen and bone wax groups, NCV and CAP values (1 hour and 4 weeks after the application) were not statistically significant compared with initial control records. The present study shows that bovine collagen is the most suitable hemostatic agent applicable for peripheral nerves.

Ameloblastomas have been categorized broadly into 3 biologic variants: cystic (unicystic), solid, and peripheral. Unicystic ameloblastoma is a rare and less aggressive variant of ameloblastoma. The aim of this report is to describe a case of cystic ameloblastoma treated with segmental resection and iliac graft reconstruction. The possible reasons of graft failure seen in our patient at the early stage of the healing were also discussed.

The first surgical closure technique that should be kept in mind is the use of adjacent mucosal flaps. When the palatal cleft is too large to close with adjacent mucosal flaps, distant flaps such as from the tongue or nasolabial region may be considered. This report presents a cleft patient who had previously undergone an unsuccessful palatal cleft repair with a tongue flap. The size of the large palatal fistula was reduced by approximating the segments to each other with maxillary anterior segmental distraction osteogenesis to make it more manageable using conventional mucosal flaps.
