We discuss the case study of the palatial town of Mycenae and attempt to propose a revised reconstruction of its history. Analysing the occupational history of all the known buildings and the evolution of the funerary landscape, we discuss Mycenae as an urbanised site and focus on a set of functional and social relationships within it. The approach, which is based on comparative urbanism and relational archaeology, allowed us to recognise features that seem to be characteristic of a Mycenaean palatial town. Mycenae's key features at the time were: a) the division of the settlement into three zones: the Citadel, the Inner Cult and Burial Zone and the Lower Town; b) the mixing of residential and funerary zones, including the presence of elite tombs in the centre of the settlement; c) the social and economic dominance of the Palace over the community; d) the presence of multi-functional building complexes; e) the prevalence of gradually developed single-family residences outside the palatial zone; f) urban planning closely associated with the needs of local authorities.

Building from the relational archaeology, we discuss Mycenae of this period as an urbanized settlement and focus on a set of functional and social relations within the site. Despite the unique status of Mycenae, the features that seem to be characteristic of a Mycenaean palatial town (consisting of a palace, a central authority occupying the elite core of the settlement, and a lower town) can be clearly recognized. Those are: a) division of the settlement between the palatial zone and the lower town, b) social and economic dominance of the palace over the community , c) prevalence of single-family multi-room houses outside the palatial zone, and d) mixing of residential and funerary zones, and especially presence of elite tombs in the centre of the settlement.

During the MH I – LH IIB period, region of Argolid was a witness of social changes leading to the phenomena known as Mycenaean culture. These are recognizable in burial rites transforming the traditional patterns into the new social perception. Within the most significant ones, the attitude to secondary burials should be noted. Their increased dimensions (reflecting the conversion from single to multi burials tombs) are connected with a tendency for additional grave marking, and with more sophisticated burial offerings. These changes might be interpreted as a part of new conditions developed by the community functioning within the chiefdom system. Their emphasis was given to the kinship relations playing an important role in creation and preservation of the position inside the community. Particular groups simultaneously defined their individuality and displayed their origin, where the connections between ancestors and descendants were crucial to define, emphasize and develop social relations.

Of those, the impact from the Greek mainland was particularly meaningful. According to the data, from LH IIIA2 until LH IIIC, the diagnostic features of Mycenaean identity, except for the language and ideology of power, were adopted by the Koan community. Strongly manifested is especially the quantity of Mycenaean or Mycenaean-type artefacts, and the evidence for Mycenaean mortuary practices. The latter is particularly important, since the social choices reflected in the funerary ritual can provide us with a valuable insight into the local identity. The PhD dissertation analyses the burial data of the community living on Kos during the Late Bronze Age (LBA II – LH IIIC Middle). The research questions are raised and analyzed utilizing the approaches of entanglement and mortuary ritual as a situated human action. The thesis aims to provide wider interpretations of how Koan Mycenaean funeral rite can be characterized in the context of adapting and responding to the exogenous impacts by a community still profoundly rooted in its own cultural tradition. The work also contributes to defining how Koan society participated in the new political and cultural situation of the LBA, dominated by the Mycenaean culture.

The thesis analyses status of the so-called “Mask of Agamemnon” between the myths and its actual context. The object is one of the Mycenaean iconic art pieces dating to ca. 1650 BC, which was discovered by Heinrich Schliemann at Mycenae in 1876. Its outstanding significance depends not only on the artistic values but also on the object’s association with one of the most prominent Homeric rulers. The circumstances related to the history of Greece were also of crucial importance. They caused that the image and phrase of “Agamemnon’s Mask” have perfectly matched the requirements raised by the ideas of Neo-Hellenic identity, answering to high social and political expectations from the end of 19th century until now. In the more present contexts, thanks to its visual capacity, the artefact is largely reproduced in all possible ways, including theatre, literature, virtual reality, and souvenirs for tourists. In that way, the antiquity and modernity in the form of the ancient masterpiece and modern visual culture have become their mutual representatives, completing the story of the unique status of the “Agamemnon’s Mask”.

W celu realizacji tezy, wykonane zostały analizy pozostałości osadniczych i funeralnych z najważniejszych stanowisk regionu - Argos, Asine, Dendry, Lerny, Myken, Prosymny i Tirynsu.
The work focuses on the dynamic of processes occurring between the Middle and Late Bronze Age in the Argolid that led to the formation of a hierarchical society known as Early Mycenaean culture. To fulfil the research questions, the settlement and funerary data from six major sites of the region were analyzed, including Argos, Asine, Dendra, Lerna, Mycenae, Prosymna and Tiryns. In the first part concerning settlement remains, the primary importance was given to the analysis of Asine and Argos spatial layouts, focusing on changes in construction methods, elements of settlements organization, and the appearance of buildings that dominate in the urban areas. The second part concerning the funerary tradition searches for answers about changes in the rite, such as the appearance of more complex types of graves, marking them on the surface, deposition of more sophisticated offerings, or the appearance of multiple burials. The complexity of the processes that took place in the MH III - LH I phases led to the formation of a unique group, known as the early Mycenaean society. The dynamism of the changes should be also acknowledged here, as constantly referring to older traditions, and drawing upon the cultural influences coming from the neighboring societies. The highly individualized trajectory of the processes should be mentioned as well, being beyond the well-known patterns of shaping the chiefdom social structures.

Thesis Chapters by Kasia Dudlik

Kolejne grupy
mogły określać swoją indywidualność przy jednoczesnym eksponowaniu pochodzenia – gdzie koligacje między przodkami i potomkami
służyły definiowaniu, uwypuklaniu i komplikowaniu kolejnych relacji społecznych.
During the MH I – LH IIB period, region of Argolid was a witness of social changes leading to the phenomena known as Mycenaean
culture. These are recognizable in burial rites transforming the traditional patterns into the new social perception. Within the most
significant ones, the attitude to secondary burials should be noted. Their increased dimensions (reflecting the conversion from single
to multi burials tombs) are connected with a tendency for additional grave marking, and with more sophisticated burial offerings.
These changes might be interpreted as a part of new conditions developed by the community functioning within the chiefdom
system. Their emphasis was given to the kinship relations playing an important role in creation and preservation of the position inside
the community. Particular groups simultaneously defined their individuality and displayed their origin, where the connections
between ancestors and descendants were crucial to define, emphasize and develop social relations.
