As a result, various excellence-marked initiatives have been established across Europe. However, recent empirical studies and monitoring exercises outlined below show that these excellence initiatives have been more beneficial for male than female researchers. Moreover, this applies to excellence initiatives from organisations or countries with gender equality plans and monitoring practices in place. It even applies in countries with long-term gender equality interventions backed up by political will, such as countries in the Nordic region. Political will to advance gender equality in academia is evidenced by the gender equality promotion that has been actively on the national policy agendas since the late 1970s-early 1980s, through various national level interventions, especially so in Finland, Norway and Sweden. Gender equality is addressed in the university legislation in Norway and Sweden, and universities are legally obliged to engage in equality planning. These three countries show the highest proportion of women on scientific boards in the European Union, approaching gender parity, and the highest proportion of women among university Vice-Chancellors in the EU (EC, 2013). Even if many key gatekeeping positions in shaping the academic and scientific landscape show greater gender equality, unequal gendered structures in acade...

Based on the recent report by the EC expert group on Gender and Excellence, this contribution explores the gender challenge in research funding across Europe. It deals, firstly, with the role of key funding organisations in promoting gender equality in research funding and, secondly, with gender differences in success rates for getting research funding in 33 count-ries. The contribution demonstrates that European countries show large variations in terms of national and organisational policies related to gender in research fund-ing. Among the most proactive countries are the Nordic countries with a long-term tradition in gender-equality promotion, but some other countries have also become active more recently in this area (notably Austria, Germany, the Nether-lands, Switzerland, Flanders, the UK, Ireland and Spain). The comparative analy-sis of the data on success rates sh...
