The tafsir which was written by three North Sumatran exegetes; Abdul Halim Hasan, Zainal Arifin Abbas and Abdul Rahim Haitami exhibits significant approach to different topics of faith. It elaborates among others the issues of belief, disbelief, polytheism, religious hypocrisy and blind imitation. The embodiment of reform idea is apparent throughout the discussion and elaboration of topics within the tafsir. This paper attempts to analyze further these issues by taking into consideration different opinions of Muslim scholars. Abstrak Kertas ini menganalisis secara ringkas isu-isu yang berkait dengan keimanan dan iktikad sebagaimana dibahaskan dalam kitab Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim. Tafsir ini dikerjakan oleh tiga orang ulama tafsir dari Sumatera Utara; Abdul Halim Hasan, Zainal Arifin Abbas dan Abdul Rahim Haitami. Ia mengetengahkan metod yang signifikan dalam perbincangan tentang tema dan topik akidah yang rencam. Antara isu yang ditangani termasuklah iman, kufur, syirik, munafik dan taklid buta. Idea-idea pembaharuan dan islah jelas diketengahkan sepanjang perbincangan dan penguraian topik-topik dalam tafsir. Kertas ini cuba menyorot lebih lanjut isu-isu ini dengan perbandingan yang tuntas dari pandangan pentafsir-pentafsir yang lain. Kata kunci: Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim, Abdul Halim Hasan, isu, akidah.

Riset ini membahas pendirian Hamka terkait soal kepimpinan wanita. Ia mengkaji pandangannya tentang urusan kepimpinan wanita dan perbandingannya dengan pandangan ulama yang lain berhubung keabsahan dan pendirian syariat terhadapnya. Metode kajian adalah bersifat deskriptif, analitis dan komparatif dengan meninjau ijtihad Hamka tentang soal kepimpinan ini dalam karya-karya falsafah, fiqh dan tafsirnya yang muktabar dan perbandingannya dengan pendapat ulama Islam yang lain. Ia merumuskan pemahaman Hamka yang kritis tentang batas-batas yang khusus yang digariskan syariat yang telah meletakkan kepimpinan wanita dalam konteks yang tepat dan praktikal dan sewajarnya, sesuai dengan sifat, pembawaan, keperibadian dan kedudukan mereka sebagai pemimpin, serta selaras dengan keupayaan dan naluri dan fitrah kewanitaan yang sebenar. Dapatan kajian menemukan fikrah Hamka yang luas yang menafsirkan nas-nas syarak terkait prinsip kepemimpinan wanita ini dari sudut yang positif yang mempertahankan keabsahannya yang didukung dengan hujah-hujah dan keterangan dalil yang kukuh dan sebagai yang dibuktikan dalam kenyataan sejarah dan tradisi Islam. Adapun masalah dalam tulisan ini adalah bagaimana kajian kepemimpinan wanita berdasarkan sudut pandang Hamka. Sedangkan tujuan dari tulisan ini adalah untuk mengetahui kajian kepemimpinan wanita berdasarkan sudut pandang Hamka. Untuk menjawab dan mendeskripsi atas rumusan masalah dalam tulisan ini penulis menggunakan teknik mengumpulkan teori yang didapat dari beberapa referensi baik berupa buku, majalah, internet, dan karya ilmiah lainnya lalu disesuaikan dengan kajian bahasan yang diangkat dalam tulisan ini. Dalam perbahasan tentang asas kepimpinan wanita Islam ini, Hamka telah menggariskan beberapa kriteria penting yang mengisbatkan hak dan status wanita sebagai pemimpin. Beliau mempertahankan kemerdekaan mereka sebagai pemimpin dan menekankan tentang tanggungjawab yang sama yang mesti dipikul dalam menegakkan kepimpinan ini. Ini dibahaskan dalam konteks dan skop yang luas daripada prinsip Islam yang memberi ruang kepada mereka untuk melibatkan diri dalam pemerintahan dan perencanaan undang-undang, dan menyumbang dalam meninggikan kedudukan dan martabat umat. This paper discusses Hamka's stance regarding women's leadership. He examines his views on the affairs of women's leadership and its comparison with the views of other scholars regarding the validity and stance of the Shari'a against it. The study method is descriptive, analytical and comparative by reviewing Hamka's ijtihad on this leadership issue in his works of philosophy, fiqh and muktabar interpretation and comparison with the opinions of other Islamic scholars. He formulated Hamka's critical understanding of the specific boundaries outlined by the Shari'a which have placed women's leadership in an appropriate and practical and proper context, in accordance with their character, nature, personality and position as leaders, and in line with their desires and instincts and nature. true femininity. The study obtained a broad fikrah Hamka that interprets the syarak passages related to the principle of female leadership from a positive angle that maintains its validity which is supported by strong arguments and evidence and as proven in the reality of Islamic history and tradition. The problem in this paper is how to study women's leadership based on Hamka's point of view. Meanwhile, the purpose of this paper is to determine the study of women's leadership based on Hamka's point of view. To answer and describe the formulation of the problem in this paper, the writer uses the technique of collecting theory which is obtained from several references in the form of books, magazines, the internet, and other scientific works and then adjusted to the study of the discussion raised in this paper. In discussing the principles of leadership for Islamic women, Hamka has outlined several important criteria that describe the rights and status of women as leaders. He maintained their independence as leaders and emphasized the same responsibility that must be taken in upholding this leadership. This is discussed in a broad context and scope of Islamic principles which provide space for them to involve themselves in government and statutory planning, and contribute to elevating the position and dignity of the Ummah.

Following this discovery, it was extensively researched and found to possess a potent antioxidant property. It soon dawned that the family of vitamin E has eight members: four tocopherols, namely α-, β-, δ-and γ-tocopherol; and four tocotrienols in the form of α-, β-, δ-and γ-tocotrienols. This chapter discusses this rather unknown and underrated isomer of vitamin E with unsurpassed health benefits: tocotrienols. Until recently, tocotrienols rarely figured in vitamin E research in spite of their relative superiority to tocopherol coupled with their abundant presence in palm oil. In fact, since palm oil contains about 70% of all tocotrienol homologues, it would be no exaggeration to call it nature's best kept secret, if not the most promising natural substance in influencing health and disease. While highlighting the wonders of tocotrienols as a safe and efficacious product, this chapter offers a panoramic view of recent research into tocotrienols that demonstrates their undeniable benefits in conferring protection against cancer as well as a whole litany of ailments including cardiovascular, metabolic, autoimmune, bone and neurological diseases. Admittedly, many of these researches were conducted in the laboratory, with some preclinical trials translated into clinical trials. Nonetheless, it is hoped that more randomised clinical trials will be carried out on a global scale in the near future. From the vessels in the heart to the neurons in the brain, tocotrienols have the extraordinary potential to be the future of vitamin E research.

This was developed in the cultural and social milieu of 20 th century of modern Egypt through majallat al-Manar and the intellectual circle he initiated that became the catalyst for profound work of renewal and reconstruction. It set forth to establish the reform ideas (islah) as brought forth in majallat al-'Urwatul Wuthqa (the firmamest bond) published by al-Afghani and Abduh in Paris. Significant reform was certainly through the impact of his 40 years labors of monumental work of tafsir in the form of al-adabi al-ijtimai (social-artistic) that had profoundly brought forth rational and scientific understanding of the text and integrating reason and revelation conclusively. The paper concludes that Rashid Rida was one of the most important and leading intellectual of Islamic modernism that had constructively contribute to Islamic reform and the continuation of its scientific and intellectual tradition in the modern age. Abstrak Kertas ini berusaha meneliti fikrah pembaharuan Sayid Muhammad Rashid Rida dan perjuangannya dalam melanjutkan rencana pembaharuan Muhammad Abduh dan cita-cita reform yang diperjuangkannya dengan Sayid Jamal al-Din al-Afghani pada penghujung abad ke 19. Ini digerakkan dalam jaringan intelektual yang berpengaruh di Mesir pada awal kurun ke 20 lewat majalah al-Manar yang menjadi corong dalam menggulirkan pemikiran reform dan menyebarkan idea-idea islah yang dibawa al-Afghani dan Abduh dalam majalah al-'Urwatul Wuthqa yang terbit di Paris. Pembaharuan yang cukup signifikan yang dibawa Rida adalah dalam penghasilan karya tafsir yang bercorak adabi ijtima'i yang dimuatkan dalam majalah al-Manar yang membawa pemikiran rasional dalam tafsir dan menjadi katalis dalam membawa perubahan dan menyatukan kekuatan akal dan wahyu secara tuntas. It set forth the broad ideal of reform which encompasses economic, social and moral transformations. This verse underlies significant foundation and essence of reform projected in the Qur'an that underpin its underlying philosophy and principle ideal. The discussion of this verse referred to its interpretation brought forth in Tafsir al-Azhar and comparing this with other major works of tafsir that investigate its comprehensive meaning encompassing the economic, social and cultural reform and the constructive method for change it inspired. ABSTRAK Kertas ini membincangkan mawdu' tajdid dalam al-Qur'an, dengan membahaskan kefahaman dari intisari ayat 88, dari Surah Hud yang diketengahkan dalam Tafsir al-Azhar. The mystical works of Ibn Abī Dunyā markedly impacted the development of Islamic mysticism in medieval Islam and his ideas had profoundly influenced Muslim theologians and mystics such as Imām al-Ghazālī, al-Qushayrī, al-Shādhilī, Ibn 'Arabī, al-Sulamī, al-Kutubī, al-Birgivī and etc. The mystical ideas he projected was systematically presented in his monumental works such as Dhamm al-Dunyā, Dhamm al-Malāḥī, al-'Uqūbāt, al-Jū', Makārim al-Akhlāq, al-Riqqah wa'l-Bukā', al-Ṣabr, Iṣṭinā' al-Ma'rūf, al-Muḥtaḍirīn, al-Mutamannīn, Ṣifat al-Nār and etc. This paper will analyze this significant contribution to the field of Islamic sufism and its relevance to contemporary ideal of modern sufism. This paper attempts to compare the method of scientific tafsir (tafsir al-'ilm) as developed in k... more This paper attempts to compare the method of scientific tafsir (tafsir al-'ilm) as developed in kitab al-Jawāhir fī Tafsīr al-Qur'ān al-Karīm: al-Mushtamialā Ajā'ib Badā'i al-Maknūnāt wa Gharā'ib al-Āyāt al-Bāhirah by Shaykh Ṭanṭāwī Jawharī (1862-1940) and Tafsīr al-Qur'ān al-Ḥakīm or Tafsīr al-Manār by Shaykh Muḥammad Rashīd Riḍā (1865-1935) and al-Imām Muḥammad (1849-1905). Both works present rigorous and convincing interpretation based on reason emphasising on rational and scientific understanding of the Qur'an. This paper investigates the background of the interpreters, the scientific worldview they projected, reform ideal they envisioned, and method they outlined in interpreting Qur'anic verses with scientific orientation (ittijāh al-'ilm). These tafsir provide forceful scientific ideas and show substantial aspiration to empower ijtihad (independent reasoning) and istinbat (deduction the law). This theme was introduced to reconstruct and reassert the important of reason and realize the ideal of reform and independent thinking (ijtihad). This paper was inspired from keynote address of Prof. Mohd Kamal Hassan during the launching of Risalah al-Qur"an chapter 30 by Islamic Renaissance Front at the Islamic Art Museum in 26 th February 2012, from his suggestion to critically explain in footnotes the ideas of li qawm yatafakkarun. It also offers profound analysis of the universal values and teachings the University had imparted and its function to provide a broad spectrum and avenue for potential human growth and in driving the intellectual reform and constructing ummah wasata (the balanced community) based on Islamic worldviews, norms, principles and values in realizing Islamization process. The study also dealt specifically with the vision of the University, as enshrined in its constitution that define her character, psyche, culture and direction. This was investigated from his thoughtful and broad understanding of its principle and underlying purpose. The essential understanding of the principle of shariah was analytically discussed in his works such as This Law of Ours and Other Essays, The Principles of State and Government in Islam and in his magnum opus The Message of the Qur‟an. The finding shows that Muhammad Asad‟s discussion on shariah emphasized on its dynamic principle and relevance to contemporary practice and modern context of Islam. It set forth important framework towards reforming Islamic law by critically reconstructing and reprojecting its ideal in order to establish justice in implementing the law and in framing the ideal that underlie its purpose.

The tafsir which was written by three North Sumatran exegetes; Abdul Halim Hasan, Zainal Arifin Abbas and Abdul Rahim Haitami exhibits significant approach to different topics of faith. It elaborates among others the issues of belief, disbelief, polytheism, religious hypocrisy and blind imitation. The embodiment of reform idea is apparent throughout the discussion and elaboration of topics within the tafsir. This paper attempts to analyze further these issues by taking into consideration different opinions of Muslim scholars. Abstrak Kertas ini menganalisis secara ringkas isu-isu yang berkait dengan keimanan dan iktikad sebagaimana dibahaskan dalam kitab Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim. Tafsir ini dikerjakan oleh tiga orang ulama tafsir dari Sumatera Utara; Abdul Halim Hasan, Zainal Arifin Abbas dan Abdul Rahim Haitami. Ia mengetengahkan metod yang signifikan dalam perbincangan tentang tema dan topik akidah yang rencam. Antara isu yang ditangani termasuklah iman, kufur, syirik, munafik dan taklid buta. Idea-idea pembaharuan dan islah jelas diketengahkan sepanjang perbincangan dan penguraian topik-topik dalam tafsir. Riset ini membahas pendirian Hamka terkait soal kepimpinan wanita. Ia mengkaji pandangannya tentang urusan kepimpinan wanita dan perbandingannya dengan pandangan ulama yang lain berhubung keabsahan dan pendirian syariat terhadapnya. Metode kajian adalah bersifat deskriptif, analitis dan komparatif dengan meninjau ijtihad Hamka tentang soal kepimpinan ini dalam karya-karya falsafah, fiqh dan tafsirnya yang muktabar dan perbandingannya dengan pendapat ulama Islam yang lain. Ia merumuskan pemahaman Hamka yang kritis tentang batas-batas yang khusus yang digariskan syariat yang telah meletakkan kepimpinan wanita dalam konteks yang tepat dan praktikal dan sewajarnya, sesuai dengan sifat, pembawaan, keperibadian dan kedudukan mereka sebagai pemimpin, serta selaras dengan keupayaan dan naluri dan fitrah kewanitaan yang sebenar. Dapatan kajian menemukan fikrah Hamka yang luas yang menafsirkan nas-nas syarak terkait prinsip kepemimpinan wanita ini dari sudut yang positif yang mempertahankan keabsahannya yang didukung dengan hujah-hujah dan keterangan dalil yang kukuh dan sebagai yang dibuktikan dalam kenyataan sejarah dan tradisi Islam. Adapun masalah dalam tulisan ini adalah bagaimana kajian kepemimpinan wanita berdasarkan sudut pandang Hamka. Sedangkan tujuan dari tulisan ini adalah untuk mengetahui kajian kepemimpinan wanita berdasarkan sudut pandang Hamka. Untuk menjawab dan mendeskripsi atas rumusan masalah dalam tulisan ini penulis menggunakan teknik mengumpulkan teori yang didapat dari beberapa referensi baik berupa buku, majalah, internet, dan karya ilmiah lainnya lalu disesuaikan dengan kajian bahasan yang diangkat dalam tulisan ini. Dalam perbahasan tentang asas kepimpinan wanita Islam ini, Hamka telah menggariskan beberapa kriteria penting yang mengisbatkan hak dan status wanita sebagai pemimpin. Beliau mempertahankan kemerdekaan mereka sebagai pemimpin dan menekankan tentang tanggungjawab yang sama yang mesti dipikul dalam menegakkan kepimpinan ini. Ini dibahaskan dalam konteks dan skop yang luas daripada prinsip Islam yang memberi ruang kepada mereka untuk melibatkan diri dalam pemerintahan dan perencanaan undang-undang, dan menyumbang dalam meninggikan kedudukan dan martabat umat. This paper discusses Hamka's stance regarding women's leadership. He examines his views on the affairs of women's leadership and its comparison with the views of other scholars regarding the validity and stance of the Shari'a against it. The study method is descriptive, analytical and comparative by reviewing Hamka's ijtihad on this leadership issue in his works of philosophy, fiqh and muktabar interpretation and comparison with the opinions of other Islamic scholars. He formulated Hamka's critical understanding of the specific boundaries outlined by the Shari'a which have placed women's leadership in an appropriate and practical and proper context, in accordance with their character, nature, personality and position as leaders, and in line with their desires and instincts and nature. true femininity. The study obtained a broad fikrah Hamka that interprets the syarak passages related to the principle of female leadership from a positive angle that maintains its validity which is supported by strong arguments and evidence and as proven in the reality of Islamic history and tradition. The problem in this paper is how to study women's leadership based on Hamka's point of view. Meanwhile, the purpose of this paper is to determine the study of women's leadership based on Hamka's point of view. To answer and describe the formulation of the problem in this paper, the writer uses the technique of collecting theory which is obtained from several references in the form of books, magazines, the internet, and other scientific works and then adjusted to the study of the discussion raised in this paper. In discussing the principles of leadership for Islamic women, Hamka has outlined several important criteria that describe the rights and status of women as leaders. He maintained their independence as leaders and emphasized the same responsibility that must be taken in upholding this leadership. This is discussed in a broad context and scope of Islamic principles which provide space for them to involve themselves in government and statutory planning, and contribute to elevating the position and dignity of the Ummah.

Following this discovery, it was extensively researched and found to possess a potent antioxidant property. It soon dawned that the family of vitamin E has eight members: four tocopherols, namely α-, β-, δ-and γ-tocopherol; and four tocotrienols in the form of α-, β-, δ-and γ-tocotrienols. This chapter discusses this rather unknown and underrated isomer of vitamin E with unsurpassed health benefits: tocotrienols. Until recently, tocotrienols rarely figured in vitamin E research in spite of their relative superiority to tocopherol coupled with their abundant presence in palm oil. In fact, since palm oil contains about 70% of all tocotrienol homologues, it would be no exaggeration to call it nature's best kept secret, if not the most promising natural substance in influencing health and disease. While highlighting the wonders of tocotrienols as a safe and efficacious product, this chapter offers a panoramic view of recent research into tocotrienols that demonstrates their undeniable benefits in conferring protection against cancer as well as a whole litany of ailments including cardiovascular, metabolic, autoimmune, bone and neurological diseases. Admittedly, many of these researches were conducted in the laboratory, with some preclinical trials translated into clinical trials. Nonetheless, it is hoped that more randomised clinical trials will be carried out on a global scale in the near future. From the vessels in the heart to the neurons in the brain, tocotrienols have the extraordinary potential to be the future of vitamin E research.

This was developed in the cultural and social milieu of 20 th century of modern Egypt through majallat al-Manar and the intellectual circle he initiated that became the catalyst for profound work of renewal and reconstruction. It set forth to establish the reform ideas (islah) as brought forth in majallat al-'Urwatul Wuthqa (the firmamest bond) published by al-Afghani and Abduh in Paris. Significant reform was certainly through the impact of his 40 years labors of monumental work of tafsir in the form of al-adabi al-ijtimai (social-artistic) that had profoundly brought forth rational and scientific understanding of the text and integrating reason and revelation conclusively. The paper concludes that Rashid Rida was one of the most important and leading intellectual of Islamic modernism that had constructively contribute to Islamic reform and the continuation of its scientific and intellectual tradition in the modern age. Abstrak Kertas ini berusaha meneliti fikrah pembaharuan Sayid Muhammad Rashid Rida dan perjuangannya dalam melanjutkan rencana pembaharuan Muhammad Abduh dan cita-cita reform yang diperjuangkannya dengan Sayid Jamal al-Din al-Afghani pada penghujung abad ke 19. Ini digerakkan dalam jaringan intelektual yang berpengaruh di Mesir pada awal kurun ke 20 lewat majalah al-Manar yang menjadi corong dalam menggulirkan pemikiran reform dan menyebarkan idea-idea islah yang dibawa al-Afghani dan Abduh dalam majalah al-'Urwatul Wuthqa yang terbit di Paris. Pembaharuan yang cukup signifikan yang dibawa Rida adalah dalam penghasilan karya tafsir yang bercorak adabi ijtima'i yang dimuatkan dalam majalah al-Manar yang membawa pemikiran rasional dalam tafsir dan menjadi katalis dalam membawa perubahan dan menyatukan kekuatan akal dan wahyu secara tuntas. This verse underlies significant foundation and essence of reform projected in the Qur'an that underpin its underlying philosophy and principle ideal. The discussion of this verse referred to its interpretation brought forth in Tafsir al-Azhar and comparing this with other major works of tafsir that investigate its comprehensive meaning encompassing the economic, social and cultural reform and the constructive method for change it inspired. The mystical works of Ibn Abī Dunyā markedly impacted the development of Islamic mysticism in medieval Islam and his ideas had profoundly influenced Muslim theologians and mystics such as Imām al-Ghazālī, al-Qushayrī, al-Shādhilī, Ibn 'Arabī, al-Sulamī, al-Kutubī, al-Birgivī and etc. The mystical ideas he projected was systematically presented in his monumental works such as Dhamm al-Dunyā, Dhamm al-Malāḥī, al-'Uqūbāt, al-Jū', Makārim al-Akhlāq, al-Riqqah wa'l-Bukā', al-Ṣabr, Iṣṭinā' al-Ma'rūf, al-Muḥtaḍirīn, al-Mutamannīn, Ṣifat al-Nār and etc. This paper will analyze this significant contribution to the field of Islamic sufism and its relevance to contemporary ideal of modern sufism. It focuses on his struggle to advocate the idea of Islamization of knowledge and its significant impact in International Islamic University Malaysia. The vision he projected had tremendous impact to reinforce the University's aspiration in gearing and inspiring reform leading to comprehensive implementation of Islamization of knowledge in IIUM. The discussion focuses on his principle role and contribution in Malaysia and his connection to IIUM. It will critically look into three major aspects of Islamization in IIUM that profoundly impacted from his ideal, namely (1) Islamization of knowledge (2) integration of knowledge and value (3) the study of religion in IIUM. This paper attempts to compare the method of scientific tafsir (tafsir al-'ilm) as developed in k... more This paper attempts to compare the method of scientific tafsir (tafsir al-'ilm) as developed in kitab al-Jawāhir fī Tafsīr al-Qur'ān al-Karīm: al-Mushtamialā Ajā'ib Badā'i al-Maknūnāt wa Gharā'ib al-Āyāt al-Bāhirah by Shaykh Ṭanṭāwī Jawharī (1862-1940) and Tafsīr al-Qur'ān al-Ḥakīm or Tafsīr al-Manār by Shaykh Muḥammad Rashīd Riḍā (1865-1935) and al-Imām Muḥammad (1849-1905). Both works present rigorous and convincing interpretation based on reason emphasising on rational and scientific understanding of the Qur'an. This paper investigates the background of the interpreters, the scientific worldview they projected, reform ideal they envisioned, and method they outlined in interpreting Qur'anic verses with scientific orientation (ittijāh al-'ilm). These tafsir provide forceful scientific ideas and show substantial aspiration to empower ijtihad (independent reasoning) and istinbat (deduction the law). This paper will analyze this fundamental influence that al-Faruqi brought to ABIM and its significant in gearing momentous success in its dakwah and dialogue.

This was investigated from his thoughtful and broad understanding of its principle and underlying purpose. The essential understanding of the principle of shariah was analytically discussed in his works such as This Law of Ours and Other Essays, The Principles of State and Government in Islam and in his magnum opus The Message of the Qur‟an. The finding shows that Muhammad Asad‟s discussion on shariah emphasized on its dynamic principle and relevance to contemporary practice and modern context of Islam. It set forth important framework towards reforming Islamic law by critically reconstructing and reprojecting its ideal in order to establish justice in implementing the law and in framing the ideal that underlie its purpose.
