Before I head off to Baku, Azerbaijan for #COP29, I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a few minutes to recap my incredible time in Cali, Colombia for #COP16 and thank the many wonderful people who participated in a full week of progress. The fact that over 20,000 people showed up to move forward on Biodiversity is incredibly meaningful – I heard that this would never have happened 15 years ago, when the Biodiversity COPs first started. It’s been an honor to represent FSC Investments & Partnerships alongside my passionate and driven colleagues from Forest Stewardship Council, FSC Indigenous Foundation, and more. My main takeaways are similar to those from Climate Week NYC and I expect these themes will continue in Azerbaijan – here’s what I’m seeing:
- Indigenous Rights are front and center. While global leaders are still building to an agreement, there is a growing emphasis on Free, Prior, and Informed Consent, respect for traditional knowledge, and getting funding directly in the hands of Indigenous Peoples, who steward an overwhelming portion of the world’s biodiversity. While it is well past time to center Indigenous voices, there is a notable shift, one I hope that FSC’s Indigenous Foundation and FSC can continue to participate in and lead on.
- Technology is critical. “Nature Tech” is being talked about more and more. This is an area where FSC is ahead of the curve, and where our partners like Esri and Docusign have been immensely helpful. The marketplace for carbon is growing, but the biodiversity marketplace is barely off the ground. FSC''s Verified Impact of ecosystem services can really make a difference for communities and bring sustainable livelihoods, but accessibility of the necessary technology will be critical.
- There is a huge need for financing across the board. Many nature-based solutions are ready to go but need funding to get off the ground. Biodiversity solutions are gaining traction slowly, growing in understanding and knowledge, and the funding needs to keep pace.
Big picture – we will succeed if we work together, and the momentum is there. I’m excited to continue these conversations in Azerbaijan. Reach out if you’ll be there—I’d love to connect.
