Announce tool: New tool to upload pictures from Google Drive to Wikimedia Commons
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

The tool Gdrive-to-Commons was built during Wikimedia Hackathon 2019, Prague. The tool is hosted at https://gdrive-to-commons.toolforge.org/ and allows users to select and upload pictures from their Google drive directly to Wikimedia Commons. We tried to replicate all the features available on the Upload Wizard while uploading your picture from your Google drive, which are:

  1. Add Title, description, Release rights, attribution, date of the first creation, and geographical data.
  2. Browse and select categories from Wikimedia Commons and add it to your pictures before the upload.

The whole process takes 4 simple steps:

  1. Login via OAuth to your Wikimedia Commons account.
  2. Login via OAuth to your Google Drive account.
  3. Select pictures you want to upload and add the necessary metadata.
  4. Upload the pictures.

We think the process would make it easier to upload multiple pictures from mobile phones that use Google drive/photos as their primary storage. It took around a year to get the whole process approved by the Google OAuth team. We thank the Wikimedia Cloud team and @Abbasidaniyal who did his Outreachy internship on the project to make it functionally usable.

Code and feature requests welcome on project tag: Google-Drive-to-Commons.

Security warning/app verification should ideally be resolved before inviting people to start using it.

Wow. I am surprised about that security warning. We were supposed to get rid of that after all our Google security review. Let me see what is happening. Thank you @Ammarpad !

I pinged Google support and for the time being removed it to "Not ready to announce". Lets see what they have to say about it.

@01tonythomas Just move this to the right Phab column when you've solved the issue and I'll put it in the following issue of Tech News.

@Billinghurst: From who on what? Please provide context in pings - thanks.

All of it. Google? Announcement? It is sitting there looking like it was ready to go, and then silence for a long time. Just wondered there was any information.

Sorry for the late reply. We managed to go through the Google security review, and after some recent updates, the tool is ready to be used at https://gdrive-to-commons.toolforge.org/

This is great! Thank you @01tonythomas for the update, and @Frostly for the bump! (I'm not sure how it got overlooked in June. Sorry about that.)

I wonder if perhaps the tool could be documented on Meta-wiki, so that the steps to use it can be translated? If yes, then we can wait another week for Tech News, in order to link to that.

If not, and you'd prefer to announce it immediately, then I'd appreciate suggested wording for the Entry! My best guess would be something like:

The GDrive to Commons Uploader tool is now available. It enables securely selecting and uploading files from your Google Drive directly to Wikimedia Commons.

Perhaps you have tweaks or more significant edits to improve that?

Thank you @Quiddity. We have some documentation here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GDrive_to_Commons_Uploader

That sounds great. Exactly what it does :) with a link to: https://gdrive-to-commons.toolforge.org/

Thanks! I've added it to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/2023/34 and I've marked the meta-wiki page for translation (plus some tweaks to the content-structure). If there are any changes needed, please do so within the next ~28 hours, after which Tech News will be frozen for translation. Thank you!

01tonythomas claimed this task.

Closing the task as done, then. Thanks @Quiddity
