Support TimedText captions in Nyoro/Tooro languages
Closed, ResolvedPublicFeature

Description

Feature summary:
There should be an option for Nyoro (language code: nyo) and Tooro (language code: ttj) when available for TimedText captions in Commons. Additionally, the namespace for Tooro subtitles says "ttj subtitles for clip:" instead of "Tooro subtitles for clip:", unlike Nyoro.

Use case(s):
For the file Anthem_of_the_Tooro_Kingdom.oga, only the English subtitles can be displayed despite Tooro subtitles also existing. I also created Nyoro subtitles (Nyoro and Tooro use the same orthography), but it doesn't show up as an option either.

Benefits:

  • More internationalization
  • Captions support for around 1.16 million people in total

Notes:

  • The only way to create Nyoro/Tooro subtitles in the first place is by manually typing the language code into the URL.
  • This task is based on a question at the help desk.

For progress on this task, see T354212.

Update (15/1/2024): Tooro (ttj) is supported in Commons, however the namespace for Tooro subtitles now says "Orutooro subtitles for clip:" instead of "Tooro subtitles for clip:".

Event Timeline

Have you seen https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Closed_captions#Localization

To add your language to the list of languages supported by this template, please copy the code of Template:Closed captions/en (or any other language version you prefer to translate) and replace the text strings in there (the form below can be used to create a translation, the English version is preloaded in the edit box). Please change the parameter lang from en (or whatever language you are translating) to the language code of your language.

Closing as invalid per last comments as there seems to be no bug in the software code but a misunderstanding how to do this. (Please reopen if I now misunderstand)

Update: Template:Closed captions/nyo and Template:Closed captions/ttj have been created, however the problems mentioned in the feature summary still exist

nyo and ttj are not language codes that are supported/known to Mediawiki and thus not accepted by timedmediahandler. This ticket is similar to T345870

T354212 has recently been created

This (and T345870) should be solvable by adding the languages to InitialiseSettings' wmgExtraLanguageNames until Translatewiki localization is completed; no problem with that from Langcom side.
