Lean, Moizer, Derham, Strachan and Bhuiyan aim to evaluate the role of simulations and games in real world learning. The nature of simulations and games is discussed with reference to a variety of examples in Higher Education. Their role in real world learning is evaluated with reference to the benefits and challenges of their use for teaching and learning in Higher Education. Three case studies from diverse subject contexts are reported to illustrate the use of simulations and games and some of the associated issues.

Firstly, we sought to discuss how role-play assessment is designed and structured around the intended learning outcomes (ILOs) set for this module. The second objective was to evaluate the assessment approach, drawing on relevant literature on the importance of debriefing exercises for reflective learning when using SGs. Our third objective was to consider the challenges and benefits of assessing student learning using this approach.

B2B 12 adopted at different levels based on different resource endowments leads to competitive 13 advantage being gained and sustained in proportion to that level of adoption. This study uses 14 structural equation modelling to investigate how levels of B2B e-commerce adoption affects and 15 contributes to gaining and sustaining competitive advantage in both US and Egyptian 16 manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises. The key finding is that small and medium17 sized enterprises can achieve growth in market share and sales that helps them to improve their 18 position in the global market through higher levels of business-to-business e-commerce adoption. 19 Implications of the study, its limitations and directions for future research are also discussed. 20

A survey of 516 UK women and men of prestate retirement age was used to establish interrelationships between gender, retirement planning, and financial literacy, taking account of attitudinal and expectational variables. Findings confirm lower levels of planning among women, but contrary to previous studies, this study reveals that financial literacy is not significantly related to planning. Furthermore, when attitudinal and expectational variables are incorporated as independent variables, gender becomes statistically insignificant as a determinant of planning.

In this paper, a case study using multimethodological modelling to compare alterative policy choice in a group context is outlined with respect to response-patrol officer (RPO) deployment within a UK police force. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The application of a three phase modelling process is illustrated where scenario planning is used to generate the scope of the system elements to be modelled. This is followed by causal mapping to identify the barriers to improving officer resourcing, and system dynamics modelling is used to simulate the impacts of a range of policy options within this policing function. A group model building approach was applied throughout the modelling phases with an expert group to negotiate a shared view of the structure and dynamics of the resourcing policy ...

Overcoming these barriers enables System Dynamics to reach prospective beneficiaries who may not have considered modelling as a means of addressing dynamically complex, multi-faceted issues that are widespread in community healthcare. This paper aims to improve script selection, achieving effective results for participants involved in validating multi-agent, policy alternatives. By studying targeted elicitation techniques from system dynamics and elsewhere, it is possible to shed light on how learning from scripts for modelling in system dynamics can inform other problem structuring methods for engaging management decision makers.

Conducted over the period January 2012 to December 2013, the project brought together project partners from four countries: the UK (Plymouth University); Ireland (Cork Institute of Technology); Germany (GeProS); and Italy (Università of Naples Federico II – UNINA). The book examines the project from a variety of perspectives. In Section One, following an introduction to the project a number of background research studies are presented. These explore the context of the study relating to social enterprise in the EU, the nature of soft skills and role play in virtual environments. Section Two goes on to describe the S-cube project itself in terms of the methodology employed, the outcomes of the ‘Training Needs Analysis’ undertaken and the evaluation of the project activities. Finally, Section Three takes a prospective view, assessing future prospects emerging from the S-cube project. It is the hope of the project partners that the work undertaken through S-cube will provide a foundation for further work in this important field and, most importantly, will contribute to the development of the social enterprise community within the EU.
