Taking action for resilience requires new ideas that embrace uncertainty and consider adaptations for absorbing environmental pressures and responding to unidentified risks. The present study empirically explores the efforts of foreign subsidiaries in the United States. Methodology – The analysis focuses on firms' activities across states. Parent company scale and performance, local market size, labor availability, and presence of other foreign firms are investigated in their power to discriminate between resilience activities and non-resilience actions. Findings – The results show the relative significance of overall parent performance in determining a subsidiary's resilience at a particular subnational location. Novelty – This study's focus on resilience activities and their determinants are unique. Original outcomes guide local actions for increasing business agility and inform multinational...

The purpose is to build propositions about specific subnational FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) developments in the short-term of global disturbance. We approach the investigation by reviewing FDI outcomes in the year prior and in the first year of the pandemic, at the U.S. national and subnational levels, and through the lens of local characteristics and FDI outcomes in the state of New Hampshire. Our methods include distribution and frequency analyses on two sets of data: secondary data on FDI and trade at the state level, and primary data as direct observations on firm activities in New Hampshire. Our leading method is the evaluation of data aimed at triangulating and consequently generating a set of propositions that explain phenomena observed in relation to short-term effects of disruption. Our methodological tools consist of an in-focus instance of the phenomena i...

Activities recorded for foreign businesses in the state range from leadership, human capital investments or interventions to direct expansion. A key finding evidenced and described in the current report is the increase in the amount and variety of foreign business activity, with expansion as a prevalent objective. The analysis indicates a significant focus on innovation in the state and outside of the state, with New Hampshire as the beneficiary of Research & Development spillovers. Utilities and banking/finance are main sectors for foreign business activities, with many developments involving information technology. Large projects drive and focus activity. The report ends with recommendations for development professionals, such as new growth segments, clustering opportunities, and new ways to engage
The goal of this study is to investigate branding models and whether they distinguish companies o... more The goal of this study is to investigate branding models and whether they distinguish companies on the basis of revenue in Romania. Analysis of covariance is used to explore differences across three clearly identified branding paradigms used by major companies. It was found that, contrary to the commonly held understanding, a traditional branding paradigm that is based on familiarity and local values does not differentiate a firm in terms of revenue. A variety of branding models can be effective if the brand is clearly positioned in the consumers’ minds. Whilst sensitivity to national culture and local preferences remains a priority, companies should not rely on rescriptive models of branding that are steeped in overall market tendencies or emotional heritage. The paper brings evidence on branding in Romania that did not exist previously to enrich the executive and research agendas on sensitivity to local culture and the relationship between branding and firm performance.

It is found that companies with innovative products have higher probability of using a responsive supply chain. Larger companies and companies further upstream are more likely to use a responsive supply chain. Firms may not need to match their supply chain to product type for improved performance. This is the first systematic research of supply chain strategies in Romania and only one of the few in emergent markets.

Using UV curve analysis, which is derived from a combination of the unemployment rate and the job vacancy rate, our research demonstrates a steady and significant increase in the employment mismatch in the Japanese labour market dating to the late 1990’s. We further attribute a substantial measure of the stagnation of labour productivity in Japan along with the associated increases in labour expense to this problem. As a logical consequence of this severe and growing phenomenon, we expect Japan to encounter serious additional pressures with respect to the creation of new jobs. The regulative reforms since 1997 led to a change in the structure of Japanese labour market. The current mismatch and the increase in temporary work opportunities could be interpreted as a result of corporate efforts to increase personnel flexibility. ...

Although the literature recognizes the importance of understanding how companies can unlock the full potential of these markets, few studies provide a framework that explains and predicts success. This book uses an original methodology and first-hand viewpoints to uncover successful approaches of multinational companies in the region. Some of the results are surprising. The winners of strategic adaptation to a changing business environment are not always emulating their surroundings. Instead of seizing opportunities, some push forward their carefully cultivated capabilities. The analysis should help corporate level executives identify viable regional strategies and local subsidiary managers establish sustainable business models. The book is a timely contribution that brings public policy into perspectiv...

Following the data analysis of the 9/11 high-jacker network developed by Valdis Krebs from open sources, we apply social network theory to examine salient arguments regarding terrorism as seen from the standpoint of complex adaptive systems theory. In particular, we explore the concepts of group cohesion, adhesion and alternative network mappings derived from node removal.

In our previous work, we applied the results of the Windrum-Birchenhall model to technology policy and technology development strategies. However, as we began to explore the Windrum-Birchenhall simulation we discovered significant limitations in their model and felt that a new model was needed which could accommodate simultaneous macro and micro-level events in order effectively simulate market volatilities. The following paper discusses the architecture of the new model of technological succession developed at the Southern New Hampshire University International Business Modeling Laboratory and explains results from early simulation runs. We continue to develop this model and expect to have additional applications and simulation results as our research progresses.

The logistic regression results indicate that industry efficiencies determine company performance and that firms that are in industry segments with high operational efficiency are more likely to achieve top performance, regardless of supply chain integration or product type. Ownership of activities across the supply chain may lead to limited flexibility and does not necessarily translate in higher performance. For companies considering operations in Romania, industry and sub-industry analysis is critical, as success and growth may be predicated upon the industry operating margin.
