In the paper, there is an analysis of the synaesthetic syllabi from different countries, also organized by target group and disciplines, through the investigation of the structure and content of the courses, in order to provide some suggestions for improving synaesthetic education. The purpose is to summarise didactic activities concerning synaesthesia from all over the world, although mostly focused on undergraduates, through the analysis of educational direction, course content and the purpose of the syllabi, summing up education methods and broad frameworks. Some specific experiences in China (XIONG, DING, LONG, 2015) are also included. A case study, conducted in Nanjing University of Science and Technology, has been used as a trial of "Taste-Vision Synaesthesia". This paper also suggests possible development trends for synaesthesia education.

On the one hand, inhabitants progressively lose the sense of belonging to places, this because territories are organisms even more dynamic and so their identity constantly changes. On the other hand, turism industry is registering a deep change in tourism demand, especially if we consider the phenomenon of cultural tourism. This specific sector reveals an increased interest of travellers towards less popular destinations in search of authentic experiences that involve at the same time natural, social and cultural aspects of a place. Thus, in this scenario the traditional model of tourism promotion needs to change and communication design expertise could support the search of new communication paradigms. The direction suggested in this paper regards the topic of the ‘communicative access’, which is here considered as a design tool able to support peop...

It deals with the need of designing communication systems able to increase people's understanding and engagement with a given place. We argue that a communication strategy able to leverage on both tangible and intangible aspects of place identity leads to a more mindful tourism consumption, and it is a means to strengthen citizens' sense of belonging as well. To this aim, we highlight the importance of blending cultural information with technologies and languages (media form and media content) to make the exploration of a place more accessible and meaningful. Specifically, our research focuses on the contribution given by “immersive languages” and “haptic visuality” to strengthen the relation between human and environment. Here, great emphasis is put on the transformative function of design that lies in the ability of translating and transferring intangible eleme...

We present didactic projects developed by students of Master Degree course in Communication Design (Politecnico di Milano). The aim of our course is to provide to the students a method to design communication devices and systems capable of representing the different aspects linked to city identities (physical, social, cultural, emotional aspects). The first part of paper will presents the evolution of publishing format through the example of the neighborhood newspapers and magazines: starting from the old paper models to the new digital forms. This part is useful for introduce our didactic method and, as experimental results, the prototypes designed by the students. In fact the paper shows the different design phases related to the development of editorial formats for tablet. In the first part the paper presents traditional and famous case studies of city branding and in the second part it presents: an example of completely different design approach; our didactic methodology and the experimental projects developed by students, in the field of Communication Design for urban environment. In our design approach, the graphic marks, the logos, is designed starting from the city details as emerging signs related to the complex urban identity. The urban sign (several kind of trace) is very different to the traditional city brand that is a visual synthesis of meanings and values. The didactic results want to bring attention to the revaluation of the urban signs as traces on the “skin of the city”. The goal of the our didactic course is to design models of corporate identity and city branding starting from what the city shows about its details; so the tra...

If we analyze the state of the art regarding urban communication, we note that not only its communication modalities are changing, but also its contents. Travelers and citizens are looking for tools able to represent places and their landmarks through different approaches and point of views. These devices and tools, in addition to inform and guide the users during the exploration of a place, also mediate the contact with it, offering new ways to interact and access to contents. In order to answer these questions we must take advantage of the numerous contributions from several research and project fields. Although the projects and research contributions are so numerous, the lens of investigation is Communication Design, as planning of methods and tools make accessible contents related to the places.

Since twentieth-century they have been not only the emblem of the enormous progress in new technologies but also of cultural and social transformations. Mass media and the subsequently emerging of advanced technologies involved an evident change both in modalities of contents production and in their transmission. That led to the creation of new media, enabling an instant, decentralized, personalized and collaborative communication. However, the metamorphosis of media is also characterized by hybrid forms where elements of continuity with traditional forms coexist with elements of strong innovation. It is necessary to combine the process of transformation of devices with the one of languages. New devices and new languages bring the experimentation from the more technologi...

Immersive devices are not so easy to use and well developed to allow a interaction in a real natural way. In this paper we present some case studies where VR is used in industrial applications as support to product design, aiming to work on the virtual prototypes, trying to save materials, time and costs. The case applications are: the design of shoes style lines, factory’s layout design and simulation, whitegoods configuration and test. Some guidelines for the creation of virtual interface will be presented.
