In recent years, it has become commonplace in Poland to modernise hospitals built in the 20th century in order to adapt them to modern requirements. Most often, their scope includes thermo-modernisation which consists of insulation of walls, roof and replacement of windows and doors. The subject of this study was the material and technical aspects related to the thermomodernisation of 20th century hospital buildings in the Lubelskie voivodeship in the context of changing values of heat transfer coefficient of building partitions at the turn of the years. Among other things, energy audits before and after thermomodernisation were carried out for the investigated 23 facilities in the Lubelskie Voivodeship. An analysis was also made of the materials and technologies used in the construction of hospitals in particular periods of time. The research showed that traditional masonry technology was widely used until the early 1970s, which was then replaced by industrialised technologies, including prefabricated ones. With the introduction of thermal insulation requirements for the building envelope in the 1970s, there were changes to the materials used in hospital construction, including the need for thermal insulation materials. In the following decades, the values of the heat transfer coefficient have continuously changed, resulting in the need to use insulating materials with better performance. The thermomodernisation of hospitals carried out in recent years made it possible to meet the requirements for the heat transfer coefficient, but these mostly referred to the value in force at the time. They did not assume a longer perspective, taking into account changes in this coefficient in the coming years. As a result, in less than a decade, they will not meet the current requirements for the insulation of the building envelope and will therefore be eligible for thermomodernisation. Such an action is cost-effective in the short term, but given the far-sighted development plan of the hospitals, it is a wasteful solution.

Hospital buildings are some of the most complex and fastest “ageing” building structures. The continuous development of technology and the need to adapt hospital buildings to modern needs leads to modernisation work. The aim of this research was to identify the problems associated with the modernisation of hospitals against the background of architectural, functional and operational issues arising from the changing utilisation and legal requirements for this type of facility. Among other things, it was examined what modernisation work had been carried out, what structures and technologies had been used in the hospitals surveyed (which has a significant impact on their susceptibility to changes related to adaptation to contemporary needs and functional requirements). A comparison was made between buildings selected from among all initially analysed hospital facilities in the Lubelskie Voivodeship. The types of modernisation works carried out in the last two decades and the most common problems were identified. The architecture and construction technologies of individual buildings were analysed. Based on the results of the research discussed, it is important to emphasise that when carrying out modernisation work in healthcare facilities, it is necessary to have a long-term plan taking into account the next stages of adaptation to growing needs and operational requirements. Not all buildings are susceptible to such changes, but in the current economic situation of the country and with today’s funding opportunities for public health facilities, as well as rising prices in the construction market, it is still more cost-effective to renovate and modernise existing facilities than to demolish them and build new ones.

Most hospitals in Poland date back to the 20th century. Due to developments in technology and medicine, these buildings need to be adapted to meet modern needs. Due to these needs and the possibility of EU funding for hospitals, modernisation has become an extremely topical subject. The aim of the research was to identify what types of modernisation work had been carried out after 2004 and to identify the main problems associated with this work. The subjects of the study were 38 hospitals from the Lubelskie Voivodeship in which various types of modernisation work had been carried out. Based on the data collected on these hospitals, interviews with selected managers and the authors' own experience of working on the modernisation of hospitals from the 20th century, seven main problems associated with the ten different modernisation works identified were distinguished. The authors formulated ten questions which can be helpful to hospital managers before embarking on building upgrades and that will help them define the main problems, objectives and a more holistic rather than fragmented approach to adapting hospitals to modern requirements.

Materiał do badań stanowią wybrane domy opieki z Austrii, Francji i Hiszpanii.

The present paper shows the results of research on general zones in large European multispeciality hospitals. A dozen or so institutions, flagship examples of large contemporary hospitals, were selected for the study. The research focused on internal zones, in particular the reception area linked to the main communication system of the hospital which functions as a public space offering a range of services, and provides the space for communication, waiting and meetings. This work aims to determine design trends in the location and forms of general zones, their characteristics and proportion to other zones in hospitals, architectural features and functional-spatial solutions. The relationships between the shape of the hospital, its internal general zones, and their percentage share in the total building area were examined. Art and greenery in these zones were also investigated, along with the presence of natural lighting, the colours, and the type of finishing materials used in this type of space today. The study revealed noticeable differences between the form of general zones in large contemporary as well as 20 th-century hospitals. In addition to their form, the arrangement of zones has also changed, and they often do not resemble a hospital space. Art and greenery play an increasingly important role. The general zone is a hospital's essential communication hub, constituting the main public space where people may meet.

The term “superhospital” has appeared in numerous website articles in recent years. This is how new hospital developments have come to be defined. There is no definition that clearly determines what a “superhospital” is and what its qualities are. The aim of the research is to characterise a superhospital. Few scientific publications mentioning superhospitals can be found. An analysis of more than 3000 websites helped distinguish the characteristics of superhospitals, and the countries in which they are situated to be identified. As a result, a definition of the contemporary superhospital as a new phenomenon in the architecture of healthcare facilities has been proposed.
