Eric Tsui joined Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) in 1989 after years of academic research in automated knowledge acquisition, natural language processing, case-based reasoning and knowledge engineering tools. His research was supported by grants and scholarships from Arthur Young, Rank Xerox, CSC, Graphic Directions, and the Australian Research Council. He was also a gratis visitor to Microsoft Research in February, 2000.
Between August 2000 and January 2005, he assumed the roles of Chief Research Officer, Asia Pacific for CSC as well as Innovation Manager at Australian Mutual Provident (AMP) and Maybank, two strategic outsourcing accounts at CSC in Asia Pacific region. Eric was responsible for strategic research, knowledge brokering (between CSC and the clients), innovation management and university-industry collaborations. During his tenure at CSC, he made significant contributions to CSC’s expert systems products, applied research and innovation programmes. His research areas are on knowledge management technologies, portal engineering, semantic technologies, and E-Learning systems. His has published in, among others, Expert Systems With Applications and Information Processing and Management journals.
In his academic capacities, Eric has designed and delivered KM, AI, BPR, Portal, BPM, and MIS courses at the University of Sydney, University of Technology, Sydney, University of New South Wales, RMIT University, University of Kentucky, Stellenbosch University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and City University of Hong Kong. He is the program leader of Asia’s only master degree in Knowledge Management which is delivered in a blended learning environment. He is a recipient of the High Impact Award 2008 and winner of the Teaching and Learning Innovation Award 2010 at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has B.Sc. (Hons.), PhD and MBA qualifications.
Appointed as the Professor of Knowledge Management at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University under the President’s Distinguished Professionals Scheme in September 2002, he joined the university as a full time staff in March 2005. In the past 5 years, he has delivered numerous public and custom-designed knowledge management and technologies workshops. He has also consulted for many government departments and private organizations in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei.
Currently, he is supervising research students on, among others, knowledge audit/mapping, KM for organisational performance, knowledge quality assessment, personal knowledge management, automated intellectual capital reporting, community of practices and social media for financial services projects.

The emerging Cloud Computing Platform not only provides enormous power to search, analyze, aggregate and store a large amount of information in heterogeneous and rapidly evolving sources from PC, mobile devices, Internet of Things, but also revolutionizes how new business and services can be created and delivered. Knowledge will also be delivered as a service. The higher form of service and business innovation calls for intensive social interaction, openness and collaboration. Nowadays, innovation is no longer confined within an enterprise or done solely in-house. Open innovation draws on both internal and external knowledge of an organization to develop new business products, solutions and services. More companies are systematizing serendipity in the internet as an important factor in innovation. In this talk, the basics of Cloud Platform will be introduced and challenges of the Cloud Service Environment for business innovation will be addressed.
