Marmi romani e bizantini a Ferrara’ (Roman and Byzantine Marbles in Ferrara) was the decorative (and symbolic ?) reuse of roman and byzantine spolia in medieval and modern Ferrara, particularly in the realm of urban religious architecture. The temporary exhibition, which was held in different locations of the province of Ferrara throughout 2016-2017 (among which the legendary Abbey of Pomposa, part of Unesco Heritage), was Fede Berti (National Museum of Archaeology, Ferrara), while Giovanna Bucci, Giacomo Cesaretti, Alberto Ravani and Letizia Sotira provided catalogue entries for each of the monuments involved in the survey. The exhibition featured a wide range of materials, among which a group of roman sculptures and inscriptions lately reused to adorn the Cathedral's facade (the latter dating back to the 12th century), along with a pair of early byzantine columns, just to cite a few, recycled in the 16th century ca. during the construction of the church of S. Apollonia, now part of the National Museum of Archaeology of Ferrara. As of 2018, the complete catalogue has not yet been made available to the public. GC

The 12th century has been a popular subject of research over the last 30 years and especially in the last decade. Many of these studies have proved to be ground-breaking and allowed an incredible advancement in different fields; however, as more new knowledge is added to our understanding of the age, the higher is the need of an interdisciplinary approach to return a well-roundedimage of this age.The thematic session presents innovative ongoing studies in different fields such as philology, literary history, theology, palaeography, art history and social studies. The papers analyze the production of important figures of the century – such as Theodore Prodromos, John Tzetzes, Nicholas of Methone, William of Tyre and Michael Choniates –and specific topics, scattered through the entire century, including the following: production of luxurious manuscripts, relationships between theByzantine East and the Latin West, and women’s agency in the century. Each presentation will be relatively short (15 min. ca.) and present the topics from an integrated perspective: while philologists and literary scholars will approach the immaterial aspect of the texts, the palaeographers and art historians will focus on manuscripts and other aspects of 12th-century material culture. The session will end with a general discussion which stimulates the audience to give feedback on the overall panel as well, by taking into account the different researches altogether. It is a firm belief of the organisers of this thematic session that such an interdisciplinary approach, powered by the innovative research it presents, will provide new outlooks on this age which, despite being the focus of many studies in the past 20 years, can still reveal unstudied – and maybe surprising – facets.
