Apelidos honorários na música popular são usados ou como uma forma de expressão na mídia, ou para homenagear a contribuição musical, ou identificar a importância de um artista para seus fãs.
Essas alcunhas são geralmente nomes religiosos, familiares ou (mais frequentemente) reais e aristocráticos em natureza. Foram usados na música erudita do início do século XIX, no período clássico europeu, com figuras como Mozart sendo chamado de "O pai da música moderna" e Bach "O pai da música moderna do piano". Também foram proeminentes na cultura afro-americana na era pós-Guerra Civil, talvez como um meio de conferir status que fora negado com a escravidão nos Estados Unidos, e em consequência incorporou a música do jazz e do blues, incluindo figuras como Duke Ellington e Count Basie.
Na cultura americana, apesar de sua constituição e ideologia republicana, honoríficos têm sido usados para descrever figuras líderes em várias áreas de atividade, como indústria, comércio, esporte e mídia; "pai" ou "mãe" foram usados para inovadores, e títulos reais como "rei" e "rainha" para figuras dominantes em um campo. Nas décadas de 1930 e 1940, enquanto o jazz e a música swing ganhavam popularidade, eram os artistas brancos mais bem-sucedidos comercialmente, Paul Whiteman e Benny Goodman que se tornaram conhecidos como "O Rei do Jazz" e "O Rei do Swing", respectivamente, apesar de tais gêneros de música originária da cultura afro-americana.
