Laboratory permeability data from oedometer and triaxial cell are presented and compared with in situ test data from piezocone and piezometers. The coefficient of consolidation obtained from various methods is compared with settlement analysis based on Asaoka's (1978) method.

Unconfined tension tests, pullout and direct shear tests were carried out on intact and damaged specimens. Natural or artificial damages were produced either by imposing heavy compaction procedures in the laboratory or by simply cutting one or more geogrid elements. It is concluded that natural damage in the geogrid may be more pronounced when aggressive compaction methods are used with coarse grained soils. Fine grained soils did not show a significant strength reduction even when subjected to heavy compaction in the laboratory. Under pullout loading, artificial damage was also noted to be of little significance for fine soil (silty clay). Rupture of the geogrid’s transverse elements led to a significant pullout strength reduction. These transverse elements are responsible for anchoring the geogrid within the soil mass. However, under unconfined tensile load, these transverse elements are responsible only for the grid’s geometrical configuration and their rupture did not induce a significant strength loss. In direct shear, the position of the geogrid relative to the potential failure surface was shown to be an important factor.

A woven geogrid was placed in sandy soil and positioned with different inclinations inside the shear box. The strength parameters of the soil-geogrid interface were obtained from shear tests with the geogrid positioned horizontally in the sand. The direct shear tests with inclined reinforcement revealed the strength differences related to the reinforcement inclination, seeking to define the most favorable positioning of the geogrid for construction works in reinforced slopes. An analysis of the deformed configuration of the geogrid is presented, based on the measured position of the grid at the end of the shear tests. Finally, numerical simulations of the direct shear tests were carried out, allowing an assessment of the tensile forces acting on the inclined reinforcement. These studies allowed a clear definition of the soil region that is not distorted durin...

Probabilistic and deterministic stability analyses of the progress of a large mine pit excavation... more Probabilistic and deterministic stability analyses of the progress of a large mine pit excavation in Brazil are presented herein. A simple method of reliability analysis for quantifying the probability of failure of slopes has been considered and its advantages and limitations are briefly discussed. The variance of the factor of safety is computed for several stages of the mine excavation. It is shown that, depending on the slope height, either the friction angle or the effective cohesion may be the most important variable controlling stability. In the case of mine pit excavations ranging from 50 to 400 m in height, pore pressures are of lesser relative importance. Consequently, increasing the capacity of the horizontal drainage system may be of limited efficiency in stabilizing potentially unsafe mine slopes. In addition, variables with no significant effect on the stability, such as the apparent specific gravity of the slope material, may be simply considered as deterministic parameters.

This paper aims at evaluating the influence of slope geometry and construction procedures on stress-strain behavior of nailed excavations. Different slope inclinations and modeling procedures for simulating nails are considered. A parametric study was carried out using a computer program based on finite differences, considering geotechnical parameters from a typical residual soil from southeast Brazil. The results indicate that a small change of slope inclination from 90 to 80 degrees corresponds to an average reduction of 70% of horizontal displacements at the top of excavation. In flatter slopes, this effect is less pronounced. Construction of nailed soil slopes, with the nail end tied to the concrete face, provides a 35% reduction of horizontal displacement at the top of vertical excavations.
