To endow information systems with such capacity, we depend on data provenance modeling. Provenance enables legal compliance, experiment validation, and quality control, among others . Provenance also helps identifying participants (determinants or immanents) like people, organizations, software agents among others, as well as their association with activities, events or processes. It can also be used to establish levels of trust for data transformations. This dissertation proposes a generic conceptual model for provenance, designed by aligning fragments of upper ontologies, international standards and broadly recognized projects. The contributions are in two directions: a provenance conceptual model - extensively documented - that facilitates interoperability and the application of a design methodology based on ontology alignment.

RNP, the Brazilian NREN, is the principal R&E network provider in the country, serving more than 300 organisations nationwide, including over 130 universities and 30 public and private research centres. As many of these have multiple campi in different cities, the total number of connected sites is more than 600. This paper begins with a brief description of the early history of RNP, originally a government project, proposed by researchers in computing, communications and physics, designed to bring the Internet to Brazilian universities. This early experience soon afterwards helped to extend Internet culture to the wider society. Most of the paper is dedicated to...

Almost everything we see, read, hear, write and measure is collected and made available via computational information systems (Carvalho et al. 2006). The problem is not so much finding information, but rather, developing computational solutions that help manage digital data in a meaningful way. In this paper we tackle this problem from the user's perspective. We explore Semantic Desktop applications, which combine ontologies, taxonomies, and metadata in general to enhance information management and help reduce the difficulty of locating data stored in personal computers. We argue that such applications would benefit if endowed with the ability to autonomously harvest provenance metadata and index content accordingly and propose a generic provenance model for this purpose.

Thus, Cloud business model is a trend to whom are looking for scalability, availability, flexibility and less maintenance issues. The increasing demand for collaborative work has driven these users to commercial cloud solutions, as Dropbox, Google drive or Onedrive, as the means to save and share presentations, lecture notes, research documents. Although those solutions offer many benefits for their users, they have a number of disadvantages, for example, commercial clouds store data in their own servers, are under local rules and government laws, usually not the same rules and laws in which their users are subjected to. Another disadvantage is related to the terms of use/privacy policy. In this context, we present CNC Cloud, Cloud Computing for Science, a project sponsored by the Brazilian NREN RNP, which aims to offer a cloud storage service for researchers and lectures of Brazilian education and research institutes.
