Frequent and extreme weather events, fires, rising sea levels, and other such events are just some of the expected effects for which organizations must prepare and adapt. This article presents a systematic literature review on climate change adaptation and analyzes the factors that influence organizations’ strategic decision-making. The findings lead to a model elaborated to explain the role of such factors, considering their level of influence - individual, organizational, and institutional. This study contributes to the literature by proposing a model of climate change adaptation and explains the relationship between the internal and external factors in a multilevel context. The model identifies risk perception as one of the main contingent factors in adapting to climate change. Other contingent factors are the organizational resources and capabilities, stakeholders, and partnerships. Finally, the study demonstrates...

Institutional changes and government intervention not only affect company performance, but can also change an industry’s structure. In this study, we analyze the effects of changes in the institutional framework and in the government development policies on the variance partitioning of company performance. Using a longitudinal approach, we decompose profitability and growth performance indicators using a multilevel method to compare different periods of institutional changes and government intervention in Brazil. Our quasi-experimental results demonstrate that changes to the institutional environment intensified within-industry variance; and that government intervention led to variations in growth performance. In comparing the two performance variables, we also find evidence of a trade-off between profit and growth opportunities in the observed period.

Design/methodology/approach Using a documentary analysis, the authors examined the media coverage of droughts and floods from 2003 to 2013 with concomitant official reports. Findings The results indicate that although media coverage conveys the direct impact of floods and droughts on society, it underemphasizes the importance of risk management activities. Moreover, the private sector rarely engages in risk management and mitigation activities, despite the documented supply chain disruptions. Research limitations/implications This study focuses solely on media coverage as provided by wide-circulation newspaper in Brazil and would benefit by being extended to all media platforms. Practical implications The results highlight the need for private sector involvement in risk management activities to facilitate the adaptation to climate chan...

Design/methodology/approach Based on 41 in-depth interviews, this qualitative study examines two Brazilian agri-food supply chains (AFSC). The interviews explored the impacts, preparedness, response and adaptation strategies adopted by farmers, processors and manufacturers during Brazil’s extreme drought of 2014–2015. Findings SCRES does not depend on all organizations in the supply chain but rather on the company able to reconfigure the resources to control for the disruption. In a supply chain with low interdependence among players, individual firm resilience elements might be preferable to interorganizational ones. Research limitations/implications This study is based on the context of AFSCs with low interdependence among players and during the experience of a climatic event. The results might...

We argue that competitiveness has broader impacts on firm-level performance and that growth-oriented strategies are particularly important in the context of emerging economies. Using a longitudinal approach, we apply a hierarchical method to estimate firm-level combined performance and analyze the sustainability of the competitiveness among Brazilian firms. Our results find no evidence of decreasing sustainability of competitive advantage over this period and that growth-oriented strategies were less frequent among Brazilian firms than among U.S. firms during this period. Finally, we discuss the shortcomings of the analysis of only profitability measures as a single indicator of competitiveness.

Este estudo buscou mapear esse processo e avaliar a profundidade e abrangência das estratégias adotadas. Na análise de respostas de 250 empresas, as principais mudanças identificadas foram as seguintes
