A. Goncharov. This is the poem Georgics by Publius Virgil Maron, or rather, one of its most famous fragments: well known as Praise of Italy (Laus Italiae). In addition, it is hypothesized, that when describing oblomovka, Goncharov parodied ancient rhetorical manuals, which developed rules for describing countries and localities («laudatio locorum»).

Voeikov’s translation of Georgics by Virgil, undertaken by him “in competition” with the translations of the ancient epic poetry of A.F. Merzlyakov and N.I. Gnedich. Initially (around 1813), Voeikov translated the Latin poet in iambic 6-foot with cross-rhyming, largely focusing on the French translation of Jacques Delisle (1769), which was considered “exemplary.” But under the influence of S.S. Uvarov’s “polemics about hexameters,” Voeikov joined the winning point of view — about the priority of the transmission of the ancient epic by Russian dactylic hexameter, and reworked his translation, counting on success and imperial favor, similar to those that Gnedich’s Iliad won. But despite the intermediary efforts of V.A. Zhukovsky, Voeikov did not receive any royal favor. At the end of the 1810s for the third time he radically changes the strategy of his translation of Georgics, striving for equilinearity and refusing to look back at Delisle’s experience. This last edition is published from the archival manuscript in the Appendix to this work for the first time.

Most of them were written by I.A. Goncharov, who acted as secretary to the head of the expedition, Vice-Admiral E.V. Putyatin. Goncharov left most of his inheritance to the widow of his servant and their three children. The article shows how this decision matured and why it was the fall of 1879 when the first will was drawn up. The article also provides a more balanced analysis of the A. N. Goncharov’s memoirs about his uncle which were previously considered by researchers as biased and untruthful.

Goncharov’s letters to his sister Anna Alexandrovna (married name Muzalevskaya) and investigates the episode of her family's bankruptcy as a result of the Muzalevskys' transferring most of their money to their fellow countryman, “a certain Alayev,” who turned out to be a swindler. Previously, this person was known only by his last name, and the bankruptcy episode was not covered. The author draws on Address-calendars, Commemorative Books of the Simbirsk Governorate and other reference publications, archival documents, on the basis of which he reconstructs the biography of Semyon Alaev and details the history of his fraudulent actions. The facts introduced into scientific circulation will undoubtedly be in demand by commentators of both Goncharov's correspondence and memoirs about him.

Putyatin, who provided material for the book of essays “Frigate ‘Pallada’”. Emphasis is made on the writer’s participation in the 1853 negotiations with Japan as a secretary and author of a significant part of official reports sent to St. Petersburg, as well as other documents of a diplomatic nature. For the first time, materials currently stored in the Russian State Archive of the Navy are being introduced into scientific circulation. First of all, these are the diplomatic documents of the expedition in the file “On the instructions given to Adjutant General Putyatin when sending him on a voyage around the world on the frigate “Pallada” concerning the establishing of political and commercial ties between Russia and Japan, etc.”, which highlight the details of negotiations with the Japanese authorities. A detailed description of these documents (letters, diplomatic dispatches, reports, etc.), partially published as part of the article, is given as well as their comparison with other sources, including notes by Archimandrite Avvakum, who participated in the expedition as a translator. The materials included in the article can significantly complement both the documentary and creative history of Goncharov’s essays “Frigate ‘Pallada’”, as well as the chronicle of the writer’s life and work as a whole. Thus, documents first published by the author of the article reveal an important aspect of Goncharov’s activity as not only a writer, but also a participant of a diplomatic mission.

Based on a whole set of previously unpublished documents found in the Russian State Navy Archive, the article shows that Goncharov’s assignment was a very lucrative one: not only did he receive a doubled remuneration and generous daily allowances while on board the “Pallada”, but also managed to charge the Russian state for his untimely return from the Eastern coast of Eurasia to Russia proper. All of those documents are published for the first time.
