旧約聖書に度々「炭火」の記述が出てきますが、この炭は木炭なのでしょうか。それとも石炭？　あるいは別の何かなのでしょうか。

聖書がどのくらいに作られたかは知りませんが、もし、作られた大体の年がわかっているならここではんだんしてみてください。もし、作られた年が紀元前４００年ごろより前なら石炭だと思われます。逆なら木炭ではないでしょうか？

幾つかの箇所で，炭火は比喩的な，或いは例証的な意味で用いられているようです。それらは，種類を問わず赤熱した，熱い，燃えている物質を表わしているようです。

charcoalなら木炭のようですね、ここでは石炭と言っていますが

聖書を見ると頻繁に charcoalといっていますから、木炭だと思われます

民数記3:4

ナダブとアビフはシナイの荒れ野にいたとき、規定に反した炭火を主の御前にささげて死を招いたが、彼らには子がなかった。エルアザルとイタマルは父アロンと共に祭司の務めをした。

同じ部分のKJV(King James Version)の記述は以下のとおり。

4 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children: and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest’s office in the sight of Aaron their father.

ここには「火」とだけあり、何の火かわかりません。

レビ記10:1

アロンの子のナダブとアビフはそれぞれ香炉を取って炭火を入れ、その上に香をたいて主の御前にささげたが、それは、主の命じられたものではない、規定に反した炭火であった。

And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.

これもfireだけですね。

イザヤ書6:6-7

するとセラフィムのひとりが、わたしのところに飛んで来た。その手には祭壇から火鋏で取った炭火があった。彼はわたしの口に火を触れさせて言った。『見よ、これがあなたの唇に触れたので、あなたの咎は取り去られ、罪は赦された。』

6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:

7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.

coalとあります。coalは一般に石炭です。ただし、charcoal（木炭）を指す可能性も一応あります。

イザヤ書44

12 鉄で細工する者はなたを使い、炭火の上で細工し、金槌でこれを形造り、力ある腕でそれを造る。 彼も腹がすくと力がなくなり、水を飲まないと疲れてしまう。

12 The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is faint.

19　彼らの目は固くふさがって見ることもできず、彼らの心もふさがって悟ることもできない。 彼らは考えてもみず、知識も英知もないので、『私は、その半分を火に燃やし、その炭火でパンを焼き、肉をあぶって食べた。その残りで忌みきらうべき物を造り、木の切れ端の前にひれ伏すのだろうか。』とさえ言わない。

19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?

鍛冶屋が使うcoalとなると、やはり石炭っぽいですね。

エゼキエル書1:13

生き物の姿、彼らの有様は燃える炭火の輝くようであり、松明の輝くように生き物の間を行き巡っていた。火は光り輝き、火から稲妻が出ていた。

As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.

burning coals of fireは「燃えさかる石炭」と訳せます。

新訳聖書「ローマ人への手紙」12:20

だれに対しても悪をもって悪に報いず、すべての人に対して善を図りなさい。あなたがたは、できる限りすべての人と平和に過ごしなさい。愛する者たちよ。自分で復讐をしないで、むしろ、神の怒りに任せなさい。なぜなら、「主が言われる。復讐はわたしのすることである。わたし自身が報復する」と書いてあるからである。むしろ、「もしあなたの敵が飢えるなら、彼に食わせ、かわくなら、彼に飲ませなさい。そうすることによって、あなたは彼の頭に燃えさかる炭火を積むことになるのである」。悪に負けてはいけない。かえって、善をもって悪に勝ちなさい。（ローマ人への手紙１２：１７〜２１）

Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

ここでも炭火はcoals of fireです。
