In addition to serving as a book club, circulating printed material produced in the metropolis by its British head office, the Left Book Club of London, the LBCJ was a center for intellectual congregation and local educational formation, playing a key role in Jamaican associativism in a period of great political and social upheaval in the Caribbean on the eve of World War II.

Three major historical moments of the twentieth century will be highlighted: a) the return of fighters from World War I; b) the influence of Pan-African ideas, in the framework of the 1919 Pan-Africanist Congress; and c) the influence of the 1917 Russian Revolution on the “Black Question”. At each of these stages and the debates they would generate would indicate that the antistablishment struggle of the Afro-descendent population in the US was inseparable from the self-determination of peoples around the globe. This perspective would be expressed in the massive engagement of the black movement in the United States for the defense of Ethiopia's national sovereignty in 1934 and repeated shortly thereafter in their support for the Second Spanish Republic in 1936. One is the case of the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil. The other is the case of Universidad Nacional del Sur, in Bahia Blanca, between 1975 and 1976. In line with a transnational perspective, we propose to convene the two cases in Brazil and Argentina in order to compare the role of institutional authoritarianism in both countries and their civilian extensions, showing that repression structures acted similarly in the chasing of their opponents as they extended their agenda to repression in the universities both in the pre-dictatorship regime in the case of Argentina and in the case of the Brazilian dictatorship. This allows us not only to investigate the involvement of universities (or their members) in genocide and State terrorism on the continent, but also to dig into the coordinated repression that later consolidated as the “Condor Operation” as a transnational network articulating repressive activities in universities.

In the magazine Orwell was responsible for the session entitled, "London Letters to Partisan Review", which was intended to portray to the American public to political and social situation in Britain during the years of World War II. However, the session also paved the way for a fruitful process of circulation of ideas and the formation of an intricate network of intellectuals around the themes discussed by the magazine - and consequently incorporated for Orwell – among groups of intellectuals anti-Stalinist left in New York City and London.

Starting at this issue, we have decided to make changes in the delivery of our material by expanding the previous section Ongoing Research by two new sections: Dossier, which will gather articles called for a specific theme, and Free Articles, in which we will publish articles that are of our interest but not necessarily related to the call. In both cases, we are talking about the same selection criteria from original research. As it has already been a stamp of our journal, we have the sections Militant Academy, with critical positions on the topic summoned; Conferences and Interviews, with the accompaniment of those who have excelled in an area related to the main theme; and Reviews to update and disseminate recent books of paramount interest. This new delivery contains a large number of material worth reading one by one. For issue number 10, the Militant Academy section presents a critical essay by the historian, and Doctor in History by King's College London, Gabriela Cavalheiro titled "Volunteering and Intellectual Work: A Dialogue with Syrian Refugees in Turkey" in which she narrates the experiences of volunteer work with refugee women in Turkey. Based on gender theories and feminist criticism, Cavalheiro proposes an epistemic dialogue on the effects and impact of intellectual work on daily practice, accompanying the lives of exiled female Syrian refugees in a country directly involved in the Syrian war and destiny of most of its refugees. Working as a volunteer at the refugee camp in the Turkish city of Izmir, Cavalheiro was able to observe the health conditions of rural areas in the region, particularly in the process of "accompanying the menstrual health of women and adolescents with the objective of creating contextual alternatives to the precarious conditions of the camps". In everyday praxis, the academic discourse of gender

This work proposes a study of George Orwell's critical to the process of handling the memory in t... more This work proposes a study of George Orwell's critical to the process of handling the memory in the societies of interwar Europe. Will be taken as reference to understand this criticism, his nonfictional writing, between the years 1937 and 1949, a period that spans his reflections on the Spanish Civil War (1936-9) and the publication of his latest work in life, 1984 (1949). Undeniably the critical profusion of the totalitarianism of Orwell's work, especially in his fictional writings of the late 1940s - the Animal Farm and 1984. However, it was exactly in his non-fiction, implied here, which is built around the framework reflective of the criticism of suppression of individual liberties in the European societies of the 1930s and 1940s, especially through the process of handling the memory. The criticism of Orwell does not only authoritarian governments in Europe of 7 that period - or their versions in totalitarian States of Nazism and Stalinism - but ultimately reach the English society of the 1940s. What Orwell will highlight, especially in its journalistic criticism, is a process of manipulation of information broadcast by the English press, be it institutional, through government agencies such as the Ministry of Information, either in the suppression of information in journals of influence or communist control (in the sense not to disclose positions contrary to the determinations of Cominterm), pointing to the construction of a official, authorized version, first on the Spanish Civil War, and later on various events related to World War Two and the war propaganda.

In addition to functioning as centers for diffusion of Marxist, anti-imperialist and anti-colonial ideas, largely forming local nationalisms, those circles acted as centers of congregation and education. The Current Affairs Group, for example, was founded under influence of Victor Gollancz to support the Republican cause on the Spanish Civil War. Along with the South African Communist newspaper Guardian, The Current Affairs Group was responsible for disseminating socialist ideas among the black apartheid-segregated population. We argue that transnational networks sewn by LBC, which connected those groups, favored the creation of a global circuit which helped non-European intellectuals to act as carriers of anti-colonial, anti-imperial, anti-racist and nationalist ideas.

This edited collection explores the implications of the creation of the Soviet Union and the Communist International for black and colonial liberation struggles across the African diaspora. The volume challenges European-centred understandings of the Russian Revolution and the global left and enables new insights on the relations between Communism and various black radical traditions - including Garveyism and various other strands of Pan-Africanism. The volume then makes a major and original intellectual contribution by making the relations between the Russian Revolution and the Black Atlantic central to debates on questions relating to racism, resistance and social change in ways which are politically and theoretically generative.

transnationalization of the black movement in the US between the end of the First World War and the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. “Transnationalization”, understood as the broadening of ethnic debates about racism and the exclusion of people of African descent in the country to engage both intellectuals and organized social
movements in the international debates of the period.
This perspective would be expressed
in the massive engagement of the black movement in the United States for the defense of Ethiopia's national sovereignty in 1934 and repeated shortly thereafter in their support for the Second Spanish Republic in 1936.
Keywords: Black movement in the USA; First World War; Pan-Africanism

1975 and 1976. In line with a transnational perspective, we propose to
convene the two cases in Brazil and Argentina in order to compare
the role of institutional authoritarianism in both countries and their civilian extensions, showing that repression structures acted similarly
in the chasing of their opponents as they extended their agenda to
repression in the universities both in the pre-dictatorship regime in the
case of Argentina and in the case of the Brazilian dictatorship. This
allows us not only to investigate the involvement of universities (or
their members) in genocide and State terrorism on the continent, but
also to dig into the coordinated repression that later consolidated as
the “Condor Operation” as a transnational network articulating repressive activities in universities.

Abstract: This paper aims to investigate the role of individual words of memory in the process of (re) construction of collective memory of the Spanish Civil War and the (re) writing of its history as part of the recovery of social memory buried on the Spanish debris of the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco and the effects of the so-called Pact of Forgetting.
