Culture is “the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society.” Organisational culture can be defined as a set of beliefs, norms, and behaviours that guide and inform the actions of staff.
This culture is central to any D&I strategy, as increasing the diversity of an organisation often depends on creating truly inclusive environments.
Inclusion is about the culture, environment and processes created by an organisation. It is measured by how people feel and it takes effort to achieve.
We know from our research that women engineers, disabled engineers, lesbian, gay and bisexual engineers, and engineers from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds experience the culture of the engineering profession as less inclusive than men, non-disabled, straight, and white engineers. How inclusive you think culture is depends on who you are and where you’re standing. Not all groups experience inclusion to the same extent.
Inclusion matters.
