Our mission at IBM Research has always been to invent what’s next in computing.

To continue scaling computing power, the next generation of chips will require new approaches. That’s why IBM Researchers are designing new transistors and new chip architectures to meet tomorrow's demands for power, efficiency, and security.
Neurons
AI and machine learning have become critical for business, but industry-leading models can be costly to develop, and opaque. At IBM Research we’re inventing powerful and trustworthy foundation models and tools for enterprise tasks, so that businesses can create AI solutions of their own. 
Qubits
Quantum computing is expected to solve complex problems that are out of reach for even the most powerful classical computers. The challenge is how to scale quantum systems, make them more reliable, and make them easier to integrate with other computing architectures. This is our mission – to bring useful quantum computing to the world.

Multi-cloud: a universal control plane

Classical computing is essential for integrating computing systems and solving well-understood problems at scale. AI is well-suited for problems where the relationships in the data are unknown and need to be learned. Quantum computing aims to tackle difficult problems where the search space is too vast for classical computers to explore efficiently. Choosing the right approach for a given task is key to harnessing their power.

But our vision takes this a step further. We see a future of dynamic composability, where specialized computing technologies can be orchestrated and optimized, as part of a unified system. In this future, bits, neurons, and qubits work together, seamlessly.

This convergence of computing modalities will enable the next generation of intelligent systems, accelerating the rate we solve complex problems–for science, for business, and for society.
