Die Polychromie antiker Skulpturen stellt auf dem internationalen Parkett der Altertumswissenschaftler ein sich rege entwickelndes und stetig wachsendes Forschungsgebiet dar. Hellenistische Skulpturen blieben in diesem Rahmen jedoch bislang ein Desiderat, welchem mit dieser Publikation Folge geleistet wird. Schon längst ist bekannt, dass antike Skulpturen polychrom gestaltet waren. Ihre steinernen, tönernen oder hölzernen Körper waren farbig gefasst und wurden mit Attributen aus anderen Materialien ergänzt. Basierend auf einer Untersuchung von mehr als einhundert hellenistischen Skulpturen mit modernen Techniken und Methoden zeigt die Studie, wie Statuen dieser Zeit mit ihrer polychromen Gestaltung aussahen. Eine erstmalige Hinzunahme von Vergleichsbeispielen anderer Gattungen, insbesondere von Terrakotten, unterstützt die Auswertung. Darüber hinaus geht die Arbeit der Frage nach, welche Informationen den Statuenkörpern durch ihre Bemalung und Anstückungen aus anderen Materialien hinzugefügt wurden. Hierbei handelt es sich um signifikante Botschaften, die dem heutigen Betrachter bislang unbekannt waren und zum Teil zu verfälschten Interpretationen der Skulpturen führten. In weiteren Kapiteln widmet sich die Arbeit den ausführenden Handwerkern, der Pflege, Instandhaltung und den Reparaturmaßnahmen der polychromen Gestaltung. Eine zusätzliche Bereicherung erfährt die Studie durch die Erweiterung der Betrachtung auf neu übersetzte literarische Quellen und inschriftlich überlieferte Rechenschaftsberichte über die Ausgaben delischer Heiligtümer. Die breitgefächerten Fragestellungen werden von einem ausführlichen Katalog und einem umfangreichen Abbildungsteil in Farbe begleitet.

Dazu zählen die medizinischen Aspekte und die rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen, welche die Reaktionen auf den Bevölkerungswandel beeinflussen. Gleichzeitig wird aber auch ein umfassender Blick auf verschiedene historische Vorbilder für den Umgang mit älteren Menschen geworfen, der die Perspektive des heutigen Betrachters um mögliche Antworten aus der Vergangenheit erweitert.

Die Gesellschaft der Stadt Rom im 1. und 2. Jh. n. Chr. war international und multikulturell gepr... more Die Gesellschaft der Stadt Rom im 1. und 2. Jh. n. Chr. war international und multikulturell geprägt. Außer Bürgern mit einer langen stadtrömischen, näher regionalen oder italischen Abstammung, lebten hier zahlreiche Sklaven und Freigelassene sowie Menschen, die aus freien Stücken und beruflichen oder edukativen Gründen in die Stadt gezogen sind, die aber aus Städten und Regionen außerhalb Italiens stammten. Wie in unserer heutigen Welt variierte der Grad der Identifikation mit der gesamtrömischen und der explizit stadt-römischen Kultur jedoch sehr stark.
Das Ziel des Beitrages ist es, mit einem Blick auf das Bestattungswesen der Stadt im 1. und 2. Jh. n. Chr. einen Einblick in die Vielfältigkeit des Spektrums an Identitäten zu erarbeiten und zu gewährleisten. Die meisten der Gräber „Fremder“ in Rom passten sich dem stadtrömischen Usus an. Gräber anderer Fremder orientierten sich dahingegen in ihrer Form, Sprache oder dem Inhalt der Grabbeschriftung an den Bräuchen der jeweiligen Herkunftsregionen der verstorbenen Personen. Von besonderem Interesse ist das Ergebnis, dass keine Bevölkerungsgruppe, wie Personen einer Herkunft oder einer Religion ein gesondertes Bestattungsareal zugeteilt wurde.

Wie im folgenden Beitrag gezeigt wird, wurde der Tod in der Gesellschaft der römischen Kaiserzeit, anders als bei uns heute, nicht verdrängt, sondern angenommen und verarbeitet. Trotz des Wissens um eine hohe Kindersterblichkeit zeugen viele Kindergräber und deren Inschriften von der großen Liebe der Eltern zu ihrem Sprössling und ihrem Gefühl des Verlustes. Wie Grabmale älterer Menschen zeigen, wurde der Tod im Alter dahingegen eher akzeptiert und am Grab nicht in besonderem Maße kommentiert, obwohl man alten Mitmenschen hohen Respekt zollte und Wertschätzung entgegenbrachte.
