The article refers to the vision of sustainable development in forestry as part of the official policy and legislation of the Austrian authorities in Galicia and the Habsburg monarchy in the second half of the 19th century. Sustainable forest use (the concept of Nachhaltigkeit or Nachhaltiger Entwicklung), based on the German or Enlightenment model of forest use, implied the modernisation of this part of the economy by introducing scientific principals in forest management (geometry, cartography, mathematics, statistics). It was supposed to lead to a rationalisation of the use and transformation of the functions that forests were meant to perform. The vision of developing this model was, in effect, to secure access to natural resources for future generations. The main analysis of Austrian policy was based on Emperor Franz Joseph I's patent of 3 December 1852, commonly referred to as the Forestry Act.

These resources included firewood and timber, and were gathered by peasants under their common rights to access manorial forests. Against the background of a changing Galician countryside, the everyday existence of peasants dependent on these resources was transformed. Forest resources symbolised wealth, and at the same time the goal of meeting the existential needs of peasants. By giving a direct voice to the rural population, as contained in unique manuscripts, it was possible to recreate and reconstruct this part of life, seen through the eyes of the poorest social group struggling with the trials of everyday life, such as poverty, hunger, shortages of fuel for cooking and heating and maintaining basic hygiene in dilapidated buildings.

The negotiations, which commenced in 1859, sometimes took a heated turn. They were attended by much conflict and misunderstanding, equally between the manor and the town as among the townsfolk themselves. Conclusions drawn from the analysis of the archive source provided the basis on which to evaluate the activities of each of the parties – the town’s agents and the landlords – and, interestingly, those of the commissioners and other officials in the public administration, whose decisions exhibited bias. The townsfolk began the negotiation from a position of certainty and conviction of the legal force of Prince Czartoryski’s privilege granting the disputed common rights to them. The manor’s agent, on the other hand, took a bold position, which he consistently maintained. He disputed the authenticity of Czartoryski’s grant and even the fact that the Prince had ever held the manor. This approach ultimately proved successful. Attention is also drawn to the role played by local commissioners and the officials in the National Commission in Lviv, the latter making the most important decisions. The first phase demonstrates the commissioners’ influence on the original outcome. The rationale given for the second decision, on the other hand, shows the arbitrariness with which the Lviv Commission made its ruling, based on just one official document. Analysis of the proceedings highlights a more general trend prevalent in Galicia, first described in the example of Rymanów. This is a case in which two consecutive inquests in the same matter ultimately ended in a negative decision. In other words, the townsfolk’s claims were dismissed, and they were denied any common rights eligible for buyout or regulation.

The findings – obtained by analysing sources from archives and libraries in what is now Ukraine – shed light on the right of peasants and townspeople to graze cattle, along with the circumstances and sources of mass social antagonisms. The rich archival resources permitted a representative group of sources concerning each type of existing conflict to be chosen. The key research problems addressed in this article are the sources for a variety of disputes and their impact on relations between the main social groups and people’s standard of living, the processes of pauperisation and modernisation, and the consequences of abolishing these common rights.

The issue has never been adequately researched, but rather has only been described in a general or fragmentary way. The examples of the villages of Odrzykoń and Bratkówka (which belonged to one estate at the time), illustrate the peasants' struggles over issues such as rights to wood, forest litter, and grazing of their cattle on the noblemen's estates. In a chronological structure the article presents the most important events that influenced the functioning, evolution, and attempts of peasants to gain confirmation of these rights. It also contains information about the process of regulation their laws in the second half of the 19th century. Therefore, the main issue of the article regards the question of the inequality of the peasant's chances despite the law's theoretical equality.

The functioning and the difficult process of abolishing the rights of the municipality’s to collect wood from manor’s forests in the 19th century, reflected a general tendency in Galicia to appearance numerous disputes and conflicts during of the reform abolishing common rights. The Leżajsk example is one of the few cases in which the municipality until 1865 could collect construction timber from forests for the purpose of maintaining urban infrastructure - passenger and freight ferries, roads, pavements, canals, bridges and crossings, and signposts. The investigation conducted by the local commission of common rights conducted in the years 1865-1869 finally resulted in the abolition of rights through their redemption with compensation. After a few years of difficult negotiations and appeals to the Interior Ministry in Vienna, the magistrate received compensation from Alfred Potocki in the amount of 1977 guldens. The article, based on extremely valuable sources not used so far, focuses on unexplored subject, which, in the broader context of socio-economic changes, can shed a whole new light on the perception of modernization processes in Galicia.

On the example of the Kolbuszowa estate the article presents the forms of easement rights which originated from the era of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and were based on commonly accepted norms or unilateral acts. After 1772 the Austrians decided to keep the norms, which was most often accented in the socalled urbarial descriptions from 1789. Prior to economic reforms in Galicia easement rights were a source of numerous social antagonisms, as shown on the example of the conflict between Jerzy Tyszkiewicz and the Kolbuszowa townsmen, described in the article. The material content of the article mentions the issue of conflicts upon easement rights after the 1848 reforms. Lack of an immediate legal regulation of the easement rights for a long time as well as the process of their regulation and purchase led to mass disputes, particularly between the village and the manor. Complicated relations between the villagers and the Ruckis and Tyszkiewiczs as well as the disputes among the municipalities, presented in the article, are a by-the-book example of the real problem concerning the whole Galicia, which in some cases took decades to solve.
The objective of the present work is to thoroughly look at the life and activity of the lineage ... more The objective of the present work is to thoroughly look at the life and activity of the lineage of Tyszkiewicz`s from Werynia in the 19th century. This family line is derived from castellan branch, which gave rise Stanislaw Anthony Tyszkiewicz (1727-1801). The founder of the branch settled in Kolbuszowa and Werynia was John Tyszkiewicz (1768-1831) and was continued by his sons Vincent and John. Because of this the subject of the presented study described the family life as well as the activity in socio-economic and political issues.
The chronological focus of the study refers mainly to 19th century, but in few cases the scope was extended to the end of the 18th century. Moreover, in order to present the full picture of the life and activities of the noble family, it was also necessary to outline the fate of the lineage at the beginning of the 20th century. The territorial scope of the work includes issues relating mainly to the territories of Kolbuszowa and Werynia. However, the work also includes information concerning the properties related to described line of the family, such as Upita, Oczeretna, Jazowsko and Cmolas.
Therefore, the main purpose and object of the study was aimed at not-researched so far, issues of life of the family, as well as the status and functioning of property, social relations between the court and the country, political events including matters of national liberation and its activity in the structures local government from the Galician autonomy.
The study is based on the collections of Polish and Ukrainian archives and libraries. The dispersion of the documentation required extensive query in domestic and foreign institutions. A few years of archival and librarian query allowed to collect a significant number of rich archival sources, as well as numerous printed sources, diaries, memoirs and newspaper.
The work consists of three main chapters, divided into sub-chapters. Each part retains a chronological and problematic structure. The first chapter begins with a genealogical family tree of Tyszkiewicz`s lineage. The next part describes the beginning of fundamental considerations pointing out how it came to the acquisition of estates of Kolbuszowa and wired-carry headquarters of the Russian sector to Galicia. It also illustrates the causes of family and financial difficulties of a young marriage of George and Lucy Tyszkiewiczow`s. This part of the study also consists of characterizing their family life and activities in the first half of the 19th century.
The most extensive, the second chapter of the work, consists of four parts characterized by estates of Kolbuszowa and Werynia as the basis of the social and material position of family. It was presented the size and location of the property, as well as the circumstances in which there have changed, until the time of acquisition of them by Tyszkiewicz`s family, and later to the end of the 19th century. This part was supplemented by the characteristics of the court buildings in the first half of the 19th century, bringing direct profits in different periods of time. The rest of the chapter refers to the organization's assets and review the forms of management as well as the characteristics of the population living in estates of Tyszkiewicz`s and its relations with the owners. The last part of the present work was dedicated to the political activity of selected representatives of the family - Vincent, George, Henry and Zdzislaw. Revealed events allowed to give answers to the question of what role they played in the November uprising, the organization of Zaliwski`s guerrilla and in Galicia`s uprising in 1846, as well as the life of the Polish community in Dresden, Leipzig and Brussels. Characterized activities of the brothers reveals what influenced their involvement in the events in which they participated.
The last chapter refers to the activity of Zdzislaw at local, parliamentary, educational and - to a lesser degree - social level. The part that presented the activity of Count Tyszkiewicz in the political life of Galicia - in Council District of Kolbuszowa, the National Diet of Lviv and the Vienna State Council, shows what the aims and objectives pursued by him while fulfilling the mandates of deputies, as well as the impact of its activities on the socio-economic situation of different social stratums of local and Galician perspectives.

The main analysis of Austrian policy was based on Emperor Franz Joseph I's patent of 3 December 1852, commonly referred to as the Forestry Act.
between the manor and the town as among the townsfolk themselves.
