Boulez?s famous essay ?Technology and the Composer? (1977/1986) proclaims his desire to widen the range of expressive means of art music by conquering new media. Boulez?s ?vintage? insights are here juxtaposed with a contemporary Quantum Music project (2015-2018), and with one particular piece written within this project: Super Position (Many Worlds) by Kim Helweg (2017), commissioned by the Institute of Musicology SASA and supported by the Danish Arts Foundation (Statens Kunstfond). At least two lines of thinking relevant for the present discussion can be drawn from Boulez?s text: the first dealing with the possible development of new musical instruments, and the other inviting a merger between music composition and science.

These activities ranged from the foundation of the first professional Electronic Studio in Serbia in 1972 to the organisation of concerts by soloists and ensembles, mostly from abroad, specialising in performing the most advanced contemporary music at the time. Moreover, the music broadcast on the Third Program inspired the most adventurous Serbian composers to embark on mastering the newest compositional techniques and the latest technologies of that time. My aim is to discuss the numerous ways in which the Third Program contributed to the development and flourishing of the avant-garde music scene in Serbia.

Moreover, I demonstrate that there is a strong kinship between the types of thematic material that they both used, and the way they handled it. However, rather than being a mere epigone of Shostakovich, Mokranjac frequently departs from his “model” and ventures into (neo)expressionism, as he uses his symphonies to perform a brutal self-analysis and to give voice to his inner turmoil.

The volume contains contributions on the variety of musical genres from all over the world. Authors engage with the role of popular music in contemporary music education, as well as definitions and conceptualizations of the notion of ‘popular’ in different contexts. Other issues discussed in this volume include methodologies, the structure and interpretations of popular music scenes, genres and repertoires, approaches to education in this area, popular music studies outside the Anglophone world, as well as examinations of discursive and technological aspects of numerous popular music phenomena.

I focus on the years 2012–2016, during which Mikser was taking place in Savamala, an urban quarter in central Belgrade – which itself has undergone various urbanistic and cultural transformations in recent years. The creative team behind Mikser aimed to turn Savamala into a permanent fixture on the map of Belgrade nightlife and a tourist hotspot; the fact that they did not succeed was on account both of financial issues and conflicting top-down business interests. My conclusion is that the long-term survival of the festival is not dependent on its program or audiences, but on securing official support and infrastructure.
This article deals with a work by a contemporary Serbian composer Miroslav Miša Savić (b. 1954): ... more This article deals with a work by a contemporary Serbian composer Miroslav Miša Savić (b. 1954): "St. Lazarus Waltz" for one or two grand pianos, with or without children’s toy pianos. Since St. Lazarus is a children’s holiday, the composer’s idea was to depict children by toy pianos, while the grand pianos are "parents". The waltz exists in several versions: from the first one, where the children pianos are quite small and their musical parts very restricted, to the version for two "adult" pianos, which describes the moment in life when children have grown up and left their parental home. Aside from exploring these musical "family ties", Savić implements a simple yet ingenious constructive principle in all versions of this waltz. The structure of the piece is based on the exploitation of the system of equal temperament and on the Fibonacci row, and this frame is filled with several layers of musical references, including: Johann Sebastian Bach and other composers who wrote "well-tempered" piano music; repetitive/processual minimalism, a style that Savić and his peers brought into Serbian music, but have since evolved in different directions; the Serbian tradition of romantic salon piano pieces; finally, the Orthodox tradition, but referenced in a way very different from the "neo-Orthodox" trend that has been present in Serbian art music since the late 1980s.

The central argument is that Arhai made a transition from being regarded a part of Serbian 'ethno music' scene (which flourished during the 1990s and 2000s) to becoming a part of the global world music scene, after Jovana Backović moved from her native Serbia to the United Kingdom to pursue an international career. This move did not imply a fundamental change of her musical style, but a change of cultural context and market conditions that, in turn, affected her cultural identity.

We argue that, since the beginning of the new millennium, this often underrated theatrical genre has been steadily on the rise, both in terms of quality and quantity. This trend was initiated by the Terazije Theater in Belgrade, where one may notice a well-defined strategy of developing and promoting the so-called “Broadway musical”, including its most complex subgenre of “book musical”. Efforts have been made both to “import” successful foreign productions and to implement what has been learned and develop a specifically Serbian brand of musical. Aside from the Terazije Theater and other theaters in Belgrade, efforts to produce and perform musicals have also been noticeable in other theaters all over Serbia. After sketching out a brief history of musicals in Serbia before 2000, we attempt to define various types of musicals, but also to differentiate between musicals and other similar but different theatrical forms which do not satisfy the criteria to bear this label. Moreover, we discuss the current stage of development of Serbian musical and its achievements, but also point to the most relevant problems faced by actors, directors and producers working in the field of musical theater. Finally, we analyze three

The Life and Work of Rudolf Bruči: The Composer in the Rift between Aesthetics and Ideologies, 2021

It approaches Bruči's work from a remarkably broad number of angles, and the chapters underline that fact that his work was multivalent. The book emphasizes his wider relevance in the ever-expanding field of musicology dealing with the fascinatingly diverse outputs produced in the Balkans in general, but reminds us of the considerable international reputation that the composer enjoyed far beyond the borders of the former Yugoslavia. Bruči's creative mind was extraordinarily wide-ranging, and this text also explores his engagement with the wider culture around him. In the context of postwar Yugoslavia, an artist was also a cultural worker, expected to carry out many duties, and contribute to the advancement of the country's self-governing socialist society.
