Abstract Here we present the first results of a systematic investigation into the archaeology of the Eastern sector of the San Antonio de los Cobres Valley. We conducted a surface survey using transects, subsequently categorizing the archaeological finds and establishing a relative chronology of the material uncovered. A lithic and a ceramic assemblage were recovered, and structures were identified. The comparison of these materials against those from the western sector of the valley, as well as from other areas of the Puna of Salta and Argentine Puna, suggests an occupational timeline that extends from the early Holocene. This data provides the basis for future research.

This rock presents a number of minor elements whose concentrations are specific to each formation or part of a geological formation, making it possible to assign a sample to a particular source. While a macroscopic characterization may be performed, not all archaeological assemblages have the same potential for distinction from particular sources. We explain and compare how a physical chemical method (XRF) and the macroscopic description works in terms of assessing the scope and limitations of its application to our lithic assemblage, which comes from two levels from the archaeological site Alero Cuevas (Santa Rosa de los Pastos Grandes, Puna of Salta), which presents a stratigraphic sequence that extends throughout the Holocene. Recovered lithic assemblages exhibit not only variety at the morphological level but also regarding the representation of different varieties of obsidian. This would suggest the existence of changes in the technological strategies and patterns of mobility (among others) over time.

This paper analyzes and discusses the presence and/or absence of time-sensitive lithic artifacts at the Alero Cuevas site, Puna of Salta, Northwest of Argentina, in a comparative perspective with similar records of the highlands in northern Argentina. Our aim is to contribute to the study of the temporal persistence, chronological resolution and spatial dispersion of these artifacts in macro-regional scale between ca. 11,000 and 3,500 BP. Evidence from the Alero Cuevas site allowed to distinguish time-sensitive classes. The presence of Early Holocene unstemmed triangular points and " Saladillo " artifacts on blade blanks dated to the Late Middle Holocene, among other classes such as lanceolate points and stemmed points, are highlighted for their high representation at this site and their macro-regional comparability. These studies contribute to characterize the processes of change that occurred in a long-term scale not only at the Alero Cuevas site but also in other areas of the Argentinian Puna.
