This study endeavors to contribute to his biography by analyzing his works along with the archival documents that mention his name and it looks at the literary market conditions during his time by examining his publication methods and the prefaces, footnotes, subjects, themes and sources of his works. It introduces some of Tilkiyan's works that have not been previously explored, accompanied by preliminary observations, and reveals the pseudonyms he may have used. It discusses how some texts that have been attributed to various authors in literary histories may actually belong to him. As a result, this study questions the importance of Tilkiyan for the Ottoman literary canon and market as an author and publisher in different alphabets of Turkish and argues that he was a representative figure of the narrative and reading culture to which he significantly contributed.

This article analyses identity construction in İstiklal Marşı ("Independence March"), the national anthem of the Republic of Turkey, within the theoretical framework of Eurocentric nation-state rhetoric. It argues that the continuing success of the text, written by Mehmet Akif [Ersoy] in 1921, is independent of the ideological stand of its author, and lies instead in its conveyance of a modern nation-state identity. In order to demonstrate this, the article first depicts the circumstances of the adoption of the national anthem and its immediate reception in Turkey. Afterwards, it examines identity construction in the anthem and reveals that the war against European forces determined the self-perception of the nation by both the negation and mirroring of the other. It concludes that, by foregrounding certain elements such as l'esprit frondeur and faith, and by interpreting the convention of Ottoman Divan poetry, the poet infused the cultural and aesthetic legacy of the past into the future needs of a nation-state.

René Girard in his model of the “triangular desire” (mimetic desire) describes various formations... more René Girard in his model of the “triangular desire” (mimetic desire) describes various formations of the triangle comprising of a subject, an object and a mediator. He stresses that in this triple relationship where the spatial metaphor is a triangle, the triangle is permanent although the object may change in each adventure. He, however, by expressing that the novelistic genius, the term he coined for the works that reveal the triangular structure can only be shaped by Christian symbolism, states that Christianity is universal. His statement apparently disregards the novelistic experience shaped by other beliefs and cultures. In this respect, by reducing his theory to a single religion he undermines its universality, which should otherwise be the common denominator of civilizations, i.e. universal. Hence the following questions: Is there any work of literature in Turkish which exemplifies the novelistic genius? Can novelistic experience be shaped by Islamic symbolism? Is it possible to find a common discourse in all religions that shapes novelistic experience? If such a discourse exists how should one interpret it? Without answers, the likelihood of agreeing with or criticizing Girard’s statement is improbable. An array of assumptions from the universality of his theory to the characteristics of the novelistic genius shaped by various cultures and civilizations would be scientifically proven, only when one dares to seek answers to those questions. This article analyzes Emine Işınsu’s biographic novel based on the Turkish mystic Yunus Emre, Bir Ben Vardır Bende Benden İçeri (There is a Self in Myself Deeper than Myself, 2002) within the framework of the triangular desire model. It is possible to find the novelistic genius in almost every Turkish novel based on a disciple-guide relationship. Among such works, however, the ones written on Yunus Emre occupy a special place. The information regarding Yunus Emre’s actual life is scarce, if any; a fact which renders his poems and the hagiography adorned with Islamic symbolism the major sources on the subject. Both sources reveal a remarkable similarity, an affinity between Yunus Emre and the modern man Girard portrays while developing his theory. Contrary to the convention, Yunus’s personality reflects the crisis and the dilemmas of the modern man. The paper examines the novel’s usage of the Sufi hagiography and terminology to scrutinize Bir Ben Vardır Bende Benden İçeri as an example of the novelistic genius shaped by Islamic symbolism. It identifies the symbols in the hagiography that nourish the novel and examines them. It demonstrates that Işınsu employs Islamic philosophy and the symbolic language as instruments enabling her to interpret the convention instead of merely rewriting it. It also underlines the author’s capacity to arrange and conceive the hagiographic narratives. In tandem with it, it argues that a biographical novel which is based on a mystic should display a competence in putting the hagiographic narratives in order and deciphering them as well as carrying an updating attitude instead of a reproducing one, if it is to be considered a novel. In sum, this study reveals the mimetic structure of desire in Bir Ben Vardır Bende Benden İçeri. By doing so, it shows that, despite Girard’s statement, the novelistic genius can also be shaped by Islamic symbolism. Therefore, it proves that the triangular desire model, which is supposed to be universal, is not confined to merely Christianity but is structured according to the particular belief and culture to which the novel belongs.

This paper contributes to the studies on translation practices in French and Ottoman literatures ... more This paper contributes to the studies on translation practices in French and Ottoman literatures by closely investigating certain narratives that are intertexually linked. The first of them is Miguel de Cervantes's pastoral romance La Galatea, printed in 1585, as the author's first book. In 1783, the French author Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian takes the liberty to reconstruct the romance and completes the otherwise unfinished first volume. His Galatée attracts the attention of Şemseddin Sami, the Ottoman-Albanian writer and linguist, in 1873. The young enthusiast exercises an almost mot-à-mot linguistic transfer, however, reserving the translator's right to cultural assessment. Subsequently, an Armenian-Ottoman entrepreneur, Viçen Tilkiyan, concealing his true source, prints Çoban Kızlar in 1876 in Armeno-Turkish, and publishes its Ottoman-Turkish version next year. This research, by employing such concepts as authenticity, imitation, inspiration, self-censorship, and rewriting, investigates the diversifying concepts of translation in the European and the Ottoman contexts. It also discusses the intermingling of translation with original texts and vice versa, hence its accommodation of intertextual creativity.

This study questions whether translating European works was simply linguistic substitution or rather had intrinsic dimensions such as cultural appropriation. It also investigates the reciprocity of literary production, and offers some observations on how translation influences and inspires " the making of literature ". The methods used are mainly based on statistical interpretation of bibliographic data and comparative sociological analysis. Turkish works printed in Arabic, Armenian and Greek alphabets are the objects of investigation. The findings demonstrate that translation in the Ottoman mind is actually an active literary appropriation primarily due to differences in the criterion of " modern fiction " from European standards where the differences are exaggerated by the Ottoman notion of translation, lending the translator liberating space and opportunity to interfere with the original text. Moreover, the inter-mingling between the oral and print cultures that obscures the definition of literary genres adds another level of complexity. It is also revealed that the millets of the Empire affected each other's choice and taste resulting in a web of interactions that exhibit the literary market and literary " canon " of the period.

In her only work that employs Diyarbakır as the main setting, a southeastern city of Turkey with a considerable Kurdish population, the writer studies the relationship among the citizens with diverse ethnic origins through a solid plot structure. Written a few years after the foundation of the Turkish Republic, the novel is also historically compelling in the way the writer deals with the issues. This article, founded on the hypothesis that plot structure and characterization techniques may reflect the ideology of a writer, analyzes the novel within the framework of the theories that examine the relationship between
nationalism and gender. It, thus, aims to study the novelist’s discourse vis-à-vis the official nation-state ideology by questioning the roles she attaches not only to men and women, but also to different ethnicities and social classes in her notion of nation. The article illustrates that a geometrical web of relations is constructed both through the setting and the characterization. This web, which initially forms a symmetry of opposites, evolves into a fusion of opposites as the two Zeynos of the novel unite on a common plane (motherhood). The questioning of the meaning of motherhood on biological, social and ideological levels also helps the crystallization of a symbolical level which originally was inspired by Christian iconography. In conclusion, the interpretation of these levels reveals that the novelist, while reproducing certain facets of official nation-state ideology such as the leadership of military and intellectual classes, constructing Turkism as meta-identity and accentuating the importance of education as national initiative,
in effect, offers an alternative to the dominant ideology by praising hybridity in terms of ethnicity and gender.

Yaşar Kemal (1923-2015) in his Bir Ada Hikâyesi quartet narrates the
stories of individuals who witnessed several wars in the time period
from the Great War to the foundation of the Turkish Republic and
beyond, as well as of Anatolian geography. He interprets the persistent
effects of war with regards to his characters’ relationship with histo-
ry, the nation-state, non-human beings and nature. Scrutinizing the
quartet which consists of novels written between 1997 and 2012 is
significant for comprehending the development and integrity of the
novelist’s authorship. This paper analyzes the connections characters
establish with the past, with each other and with non-human beings
by concentrating on their position vis-à-vis the nation-state. Theories
of nationalism, ecocriticism and approaches that interpret the relation-
ship between history and identity through the perspective of memory
construct the methodological frame of the analysis. Besides proposing
a new perspective on the writer’s criticism of history, the paper aims to
demonstrate how Yaşar Kemal portrays the human-nature interaction.
Correspondingly, it questions the ways in which the author problem-
atizes the novel genre by employing original narrative techniques as
well as the possible reasons behind this intervention. It is concluded
that the author creates an alternative narrative of history in a dialogic
relationship with the dominant discourse of the nation-state. Instead
of the official narrative of the state who writes history, the alternative
comprises the stories of the individuals who make history. In order to
construct it, it is observed that the author borrows oral culture tech-
niques and transforms them in the novel genre. In this way, while crit-
icizing the Western Europe-oriented nation-state which is a product
of rationalism, he also problematizes the novel genre as the literary
product of the same understanding. In accordance with it, he over-
rides the anthropocentric conception which positions human above
non-human beings, by depicting human as a part of a holistic eco-sys-
tem in mutual interaction with more-than-human nature.

Her iki marşı karşılaştırmalı biçimde çözüm-
leyen Ayaydın-Cebe, La Marseillaise’in tarihi ve alımlanışıyla aynı
bağlamda İstiklâl Marşı’nın tarihsel ve metinsel anlamlarına deği-
niyor. La Marseillaise’in oluşum ve kabul süreçlerinin Osmanlı’ya
nasıl yansıdığına yer veren Ayaydın-Cebe, her iki marşı incelerken,
