Monfalcone (in the local Bisiac dialect: Mofalcòn, Slovene: Tržič, German: Falkenberg) is a toun an comune o the province o Gorizia (Friuli-Venezia Giulia, northren Italy), locatit on the coast o the Gulf o Trieste. Monfalcone means "Munt o Falcon" in Italian.
It is a major industrial centre for manufacturin ships, airplanes, textiles, chemicals an refined ile. It is the hame o Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani.

History
[eedit | eedit soorce]In prehistoric times the aurie o Monfalcone hoosed several fortifeed veelages cried castellieri. Efter the foondation o the Roman ceety o Aquileia (181 BC), some thermal biggins wur creatit on the hills, kent as Insulae Clarae.
Efter the Ostrogoth, Byzantine, Lombard an Frank domination, Monfalcone wis controlled bi the Patriairch o Aquileia stairtin frae 967. The Venetians conquered it in 1420 efter three days o siege, keepin it till 1511, when it fell tae the French. Conquered back bi Venice, it wis ravagit bi the troops o emperor Maximilian I in 1513, who destroyed the Rocca. In 1521 it wis returned tae Venice, unner which it remained till 1797. It wis controlled bi Fraunce till the faw o Napoleon, efter which it became pairt o the Austrian Empire.
Durin Warld War I, the toun wis captured bi Italy in 1915. It wis briefly recaptured bi Austrick in 1917, efter the battle o Caporetto. Monfalcone returned tae Italy in 1918.
