Dr. Yılmaz received his medical degree from Ankara University School of Medicine in 1998. He studied on Human Physiology at Ankara University School of Medicine Department of Physiology. He completed his residency in pediatrics at the Ministery of Health Ankara Research and Training Hospital (Ankara) between 1999 and 2004. Then, he worked as a pediatrician at the Doğubayazıt State Hospital between 2004 and 2007 in Ağrı.Dr. Yılmaz is particularly interested in critical care medicine, periodic fever syndromes, asthma, nutrition of critically ill children. Dr. Yılmaz has published multiple refereed journal articles. Objective: This study aimed to explore the compliance of management strategies for pediatric acut... more Objective: This study aimed to explore the compliance of management strategies for pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome in pediatric intensive care units in Turkey with current guidelines.Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional, prospective survey study. We delivered the survey, consisting of questions on topics in the relevant literature on acute respiratory distress syndrome management in children (1 month–18 years), to the heads/staff of the 100 units via email or phone. Results: In total, 51 (51%) out of 100 targeted pediatric intensive care units responded to the survey. We found out that 17 (33%) units comply with no acute respiratory distress syndrome guideline, while 65% frequently utilize cuffed endotracheal tubes. The majority of the units (86%) achieve their mechanical ventilation targets with the help of pressure control modes. Besides, steroid and surfactant use are present in 47% and 45% of the units, respectively, while 16% and 38% of the units use inhaled nitric oxide and high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, respectively. Conclusion: Lung-protective ventilation strategies preventing ventilator-associated lung injury are explicit in all responding units. The present survey revealed that current mechanical ventilation and non-ventilation treatment strategies in pediatric ARDS in Turkey are relatively uniform and largely consistent with international practices.

This study aimed to determine the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of the pediatric healthcare professionals about the defibrillator use and to offer solutions if there was room for improvement. Procedures: This was a multicenter survey study. Findings: The study included 716 healthcare professionals with an average age of 30.1 ± 5.8 years; 50% (n=358) were pediatric residents and 41.3% (n=296) had less than three years of professional experience. We conducted a serological survey to determine the extent of subclinical infection caused by the outbreak. Single serum samples were collected from five individuals with avian influenza whose nasopharyngeal swabs tested positive for H5 RNA by polymerase chain reaction, 28 family contacts of the cases, 95 poultry cullers, 75 individuals known to have had contact with diseased chickens and 81 individuals living in the region with no known contact with infected chickens and/or patients. Paired serum samples were collected from 97 healthcare workers. All sera were tested for the presence of neutralizing antibodies by enzyme-linked immunoassay, haemagglutination inhibition and microneutralization assays. Background: Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is a genetic disease characterized by recurrent fe... more Background: Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is a genetic disease characterized by recurrent febrile attacks and inflammation of serous membranes. Amyloidosis is frequent in untreated FMF patients and is also the most important complication of FMF. It is generally seen with renal, hepatic, gastrointestinal, spleen, testicular and thyroidal involvement. Case presentation: Herein, we report a case with acute scrotum and hydrocele amyloidosis as a presenting finding in a child with FMF. Conclusion: Although the acute scrotum and scrotal swelling are not characteristic clinical features of FMF, this genetic disease should not be forgotten in the differential diagnosis of acute scrotum in patients of Mediterranean origins.
