Timothy Neal
I have a varied background in Anthropology, Tourism Studies, Landscape Archaeology, Urban and Spatial Planning, Theology and the broad field of Social Science.
I completed my doctoral thesis at the department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of Sheffield. It was an anthropological project focussed around an ethnography of a village in the South of France in the context of British migration.
Philosophically I am much drawn to the work of Slajov Zizek whose work I've been following for 10 years now. I consider myself an independent academic - I've termed myself a "paracademic" or at times an "involunteer" having been heavily involved in voluntary work over many years.
I work with several artists involving socially engaged arts practice. Most recently with Jonathan Turner on a photography portrait project where I used audio recordings to account for my anthropological perspective.
I take a leading role in several community-based projects (at times involuntary work…). I have been active in the field of asylum and refugee support through ASSIST (Sheffield) and I am currently working with Roma community members across South Yorkshire where we have established a Roma led organisation – Roma Futures.
I continue to work in Urban Studies and Planning where I lead seminars at undergraduate and post-graduate level as well as supervising Master’s dissertations.
