The baryton is a hybrid instrument, a viola da gamba with an added set of strings that can be played simultanously bowed and plucked. The second set of strings has two functions: reinforcing the sound with sympathetic resonance, it can also be plucked with the thumb of left hand. The instrument can be classed according to three types: baroque, 3-manual and classical baryton. Little played from the 17th to the early 19th century, the baryton underwent a slow revival from the late 19th century, with its popularity continuing to increase slightly after the second world war. The best known repertoire for the instrument is the 175 works by Joseph Haydn, particularly his 126 trios for baryton, viola and cello.
