Orphanage

An orphanage is an institution that takes in and cares for orphans.^[1] It can also mean the state of being an orphan.^[1]

Historically it was very often the church or the state who cared for orphans.^[source?] Children in orphanages may have suffered from child abuse or trauma from their parents.
