Richard Brevard Russell, Jr. (November 2, 1897 – January 21, 1971) was an American politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Russell was born in Winder, Georgia.[1] He studied at University of Georgia School of Law.

Russell was the 66th Governor of Georgia. He served as governor from 1931 to 1933. He then served as the United States senator of Georgia. He served as senator from 1933 to 1971.

Russell was the President pro tempore of the United States Senate. He served as president pro tempore from 1969 to 1971. Russell ran for President of the United States in 1948. He lost the primary to Harry S. Truman.

Russell was never married and had no children. Russell died in Washington, D.C. from emphysema, aged 73.
