Our research interests are at the interface of chemistry, biology and biomaterials science. With expertise in organic synthesis, natural product chemistry, biomimetic chemistry, and chemical biology, our group has been involved in solving challenging problems related to human health and society giving emphasis on neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson's Diseases. The group published over 95 research papers, co-authored 10 books, and 25 book chapters, and contributed to 100 symposia/ seminars/ conferences/ workshops. The research work has been funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and DRDO. I am on the Editorial Advisory Board of various journals of repute and a Life Member of various societies.

Use of flavins as catalyst for the remediation of halogenated compounds

Flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs) are an important monooxygenase system present in living o... more Flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs) are an important monooxygenase system present in living organisms starting from eukaryotes to human beings. They are involved in catalysing wide variety of oxygenation reactions including bioremediation process. The central reaction in these enzymes is always the formation of a peroxyflavin intermediate by reaction of reduced flavin with molecular oxygen. The microenvironment of the peroxyflavin regulates the reactive character of the peroxyflavin. Utilizing this aspect of the biology, chemremediation of aromatic halogenated phenols have been initiated and achieved using flavinium perchlorate salt as catalyst in 38 % yield. The flavinium perchlorate during the reaction gets converted to peroxyflavin with H2O2. This method will be useful in the removal of halogens from aromatic halogenated phenols.

10-Substituted isoalloxazines, also known as flavins, are biologically active tricyclic N-contain... more 10-Substituted isoalloxazines, also known as flavins, are biologically active tricyclic N-containing heterocyclic molecules. They are the cofactors of flavoenzymes which are responsible for the oxidation in biological systems. The flavoenzymes are involved in the catalysis of wide variety of biological redox reactions, involve in electron transfer process and involved in the regulation of neurotransmitters and detoxification of xenobiotics such as oxidation of amines to imines, thiols to disulfides, the hydroxylation of aromatic species etc. The three most important isoalloxazine derivative found in nature are riboflavin (vitamin B2), flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). The characteristic properties of these molecules are attributed to the isoalloxazine core moiety. Chemotaxonomy: A Tool for Plant Classification

Nature which consists of so many variabilities of living components of the environment possesses ... more Nature which consists of so many variabilities of living components of the environment possesses useful, harmful and inactive chemical constituents. The classification based on these chemical constituents is known as chemotaxonomy. All the living components of the environment produce secondary metabolites that are derived from primary metabolites. The chemical structure of the secondary metabolites is often specific and restricted to taxonomically related organisms. The classification of plants on the basis of specific class of secondary metabolites and their biosynthetic pathways constitutes chemotaxonomy. Its study is helpful to taxonomist, phytochemists and pharmacologists to solve selected taxonomical problems.

Covalently linked flavin and porphyrin (flavoporphyrins) have attracted attention due to their applications as chemical models for flavoproteins and related enzymes. In this review, the literature has been surveyed to provide a comprehensive coverage of the synthetic methodology and characterization techniques of various types of synthetic flavoporphyrins.
