Daniela Chironi
I am a post-doctoral researcher at the Scuola Normale Superiore (SNS), and member of the ‘Centre on Social Movement Studies’ (COSMOS), in Florence. I hold a Ph.D. in Political and Social Sciences from the European University Institute (EUI). My research interests concern social movements, political parties (particularly radical left parties) and the relationships between them. Currently, I am investigating the political consequences of economic inequality in Italy together with the economists Mario Pianta and Francesco Bloise.
I have taught Political Science, Political Communications, Political Analysis and Theory, and Economics at the University of Florence, Monash University and Middlebury College. My articles appeared in the following journals: PACO-Partecipazione e Conflitto (with D. della Porta, 2015; with R. Fittipaldi 2017); South European Society and Politics (with D. della Porta and J. Bergan Draege 2017); American Behavioral Scientist (2019). As a member of the ‘Marxism(s) and Social Movements Working Group’, I have co-edited the Special Issue ‘Refocusing the Analysis of Mobilizations. Capitalism in Social Movement Research’ of Anthropological Theory (with L. Cini, E. Drapalova and F. Tomasello 2017).

parties. While parties and movements are often assumed to be
separate entities, the borders between the two have proved to be more
fluent. Parties frequently play a pivotal role in movement politics, and
movements influence parties through the dual militancy of many of
their members. The article presents two cases of Occupy movements
taking place within major left-of-centre parties – the Italian PD and the
Turkish CHP – and analyses the causes of discontent within the party
and the choice of activists to voice this discontent rather than exit the
party. It is argued that, beyond country specificities, shared factors
include the perceived betrayal of social-democratic values, a lack of
internal democracy, and electoral defeats. In both cases, activists’
choice to refer to Occupy in their opposition inside the party can be
explained by the normative resonance of anti-austerity protest claims
and forms within the party, as well as the instrumental exploitation
of mass media attention to Occupy as a logo.
studies have not paid enough attention to the dynamics of capitalist transformations. Second, we identify the epistemological biases of the discipline. Third, we propose some solutions to fill this gap, namely exploring the relations between the dynamics of the accumulation process and the social movement formation processes. For us, where there is a process of social movement formation, a form of capitalist transformation always takes place. The ambition is to trigger a cross-disciplinary debate both on the reasons for these silences and on the importance of capitalism (and its criticism) as a key analytical framework in contemporary social sciences.
Che cosa sono i movimenti sociali e come sono cambiati dal dopoguerra a oggi? Quale rapporto hanno con la politica istituzionale e i partiti, nel quadro italiano e internazionale?
