In addition to being the music director for Digitalis, I am the founder of SomaFM. I program music for several SomaFM channels, including Groove Salad, Secret Agent, Drone Zone, Space Station Soma and Lush.
The music I play on Digitalis was largely inspired by music I heard the first time I had attended Iceland Airwaves in 2007. I had been hearing this relatively new genre&emdash; analog rock instrumentation paired with laptops and digital samplers&emdash; for a while but it seemed to explode at Airwaves 2007. And I was hooked, and tracked down a ton of that kind of music. And now I'm playing it for you 24/7.
In general, I tend to like music that leans toward mellow styles, and I love music that is rich in production values. Some people may find that statement at odds with the DIY ethic, but modern computer technology has made the tools of rich production available to almost anyone. You don't have to have a lot of money or a fancy studio to get a recording with great production values, you just have to have a vision and you can create it with the tools we have such easy access to today.
