The objective of this work was to compare, through the use of chemical (flavonoids, volatile organic compounds, and chiral compounds) and molecular (DNA fingerprint based on RAPD-PCR) markers, the residual population of Neapolitan limmo with other populations of sweet limes, identified in Calabria and known as "lemoncetta Locrese". We report for the first time specific botanical characteristics of the two fruits and unequivocally show that the ancient sweet Mediterranean limes Neapolitan limmo and lemoncetta Locrese are synonyms of the same Citrus species. Owing to the biodiversity conserved in their places of origin, it will now be possible to recover, enhance and implement the use of this ancient sweet lime for agro-industrial purposes.
A gas chromatographic method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 12 pyrethroids (... more A gas chromatographic method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 12 pyrethroids (tefluthrin, bifenthrin, fenpropathrin, cyhalothrin, permethrin, cyfluthrin, cypermethrin, -cypermethrin, flucythrinate, fenvalerate, fluvalinate, and deltamethrin) in tomato puree, peach nectar, orange juice, and canned peas. A miniaturized extraction–partition procedure requiring small amounts of nonchlorinated solvents is used. Samples are extracted with acetone, partitioned with ethyl acetate–cyclohexane (50 + 50, v/v), and cleaned up on a Florisil cartridge. The final extract is analyzed by gas chromatography with both electron capture and mass spectrometric detection modes. Studies at fortification levels of 0.010–0.100 mg/kg gave mean recoveries ranging from 70.2 to 96.0% and coefficients of variation between 4.0 and 13.9% for all compounds. Quantitation limits were <0.010 mg/kg for electron capture detection.

The benzo[a]pyrene concentrations ranged from <0.04 to 0.40 µg kg(-1), and 72.9% of the samples showed detectable levels of this compound. The highest contamination level was observed for chrysene with three additional PAHs (benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[b]fluoranthene and benzo[c]fluorene) giving mean values higher than the mean value for benzo[a]pyrene. Chrysene was detected in all the samples at concentrations ranging from 0.07 to 1.80 µg kg(-1) (median 0.31 µg kg(-1)). The contamination expressed as PAH4 (sum of benzo(a)pyrene, chrysene, benzo(a)anthracene and benzo(b)fluoranthene), for which the maximum tolerable limit has been set by Commission Regulation (EU) No. 835/2011, varied between ...

This method includes a QuEChERS procedure. Identification and quantification were performed using GC–MS/MS, with an isotope dilution approach using 2H-labelled phthalates. Performance characteristics, such as limits of quantitation (LOQs), precision, and accuracy were studied. Studies at fortification levels of 1–10 mg/kg gave mean recoveries ranging from 70 to 120% for most analytes. Relative standard deviations were < 10%. LOQs were n the range 0.05-2 mg/kg for all plasticizers . The Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 on Plastic Materials and Articles Intended to Come into Contact with Food -commonly referred to as the Plastics Implementing Measure (PIM) - is directly applicable in all of the EU Member States as of May 1, 2011. The commonly used analytical procedures were based on gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode and involved direct analysis of phthalates, acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC), di (2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DEHP), dibutyl sebacate (DBS), di-isononyl cyclohexane 1,2 dicarboxylate (DINCH) as well as the analysis of epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) and polyadipates after transesterification. Riasunto I plastificanti incorporati nel PVC per impartire caratteristiche di flessibilità e lavorabilità possono migrare dal materiale di imballaggio all’aliment...
The feasibility of using liquid chromatography/ electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry ... more The feasibility of using liquid chromatography/ electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/ESI-MS/MS) for determining 2 fungicides (fludioxonil and famoxadone) in tomato pulp, pear purée, and concentrated lemon juice has been evaluated. A miniaturized extraction-partition procedure requiring small amounts of nonchlorinated solvents was used. The extracts (5 microL) were analyzed by LC/ESI-MS/MS without previous cleanup. Chromatographic determination was performed using a C18 column with isocratic elution. Four MS/MS transitions of precursor ions were monitored simultaneously (2 for each pesticide) by means of negative ESI. Mean recoveries from samples at fortification levels of 0.002-0.020 mg/kg (fludioxonil) and 0.010-0.100 mg/kg (famoxadone) ranged from 77.1 to 96.5%, with associated relative standard deviations between 4.2 and 11.5%.

A liquid chromatographic method with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC/ESI-MS/... more A liquid chromatographic method with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC/ESI-MS/MS) has been developed for the sensitive and selective determination of seven benzoylphenylurea insecticide residues (diflubenzuron, triflumuron, lufenuron, flufenoxuron, teflubenzuron, chlorfuazuron, hexaflumuron) in pear baby purée, concentrated lemon juice, and tomato pulp. The general sample extraction/partition method for our established multiresidue methods has been used. The entire procedure involves extraction of residues with acetone and partition into ethyl acetate/cyclohexane. Chromatographic determination was performed using a C18 column and isocratic elution. Fourteen MS/MS transitions of precursor ions were monitored (two for each pesticide) using negative ESI. The majority of mean recoveries at fortification levels of 0.002-0.020 and 0.020-0.200 mg/kg were in the range 77-102% with relative standard deviations between 2 and 10%.
