James L. (Jay) McClelland
My research addresses a broad range of cognitive neuroscience issues in learning, memory, language and cognitive development. I keep an archive of my publications at psych.stanford.edu/~jlm/papers.
Currently my laboratory is exploring the domain of mathematical cognition. We hope to understand how the Parallel Distributed Processing framework, described briefly below, might help us understand our ability to learn and to use mathematical concepts, ranging from the natural numbers through geometry, trigonometry, and beyond.
The PDP framework: I view cognitive functions as emerging from the parallel, distributed processing activity of neural populations, with learning occurring through the adaptation of connections among participating neurons, as discussed in Parallel Distributed Processing (Rumelhart, McClelland, and the PDP Research Group, MIT Press, 1986) and Semantic Cognition: a Parallel-Distributed Processing Approach (Rogers and McClelland, MIT Press, 2004).
