Frequently asked questions

How do I sign up for a subscription-based plan?

You can sign up or switch to a subscription-based plan from the Your plans page in the Stripe Dashboard.

We’re still working to make subscription-based plans available for our customers globally. If your region is supported, you’ll see the option to sign up.

What's Stripe’s Subscription Cancellation Policy?

All of our subscription plans require an annual commitment. Your annual contract starts at 00:00 UTC on the day after you sign up, and ends one year later. After you sign up for a subscription, you’re responsible for paying subscription and potential overage fees incurred for the entire year—even if you schedule a cancellation during your current term.

All of our subscription plans automatically renew for another one-year term unless you schedule a cancellation to not renew your contract. If you don’t want to automatically renew, you need to schedule a cancellation of your subscription before the auto-renew date.

How do I cancel my subscription-based plan?

You must be an account admin to cancel a subscription.

To schedule a cancellation:

  • Navigate to the Dashboard settings page.
  • Click on Your plans.
  • Find the plan you want to cancel and click Manage plan.
  • Click Cancel and read through the information we provide. Confirm your cancellation.
  • You’ll see the scheduled date of cancellation listed on the plan’s detail page.

After you schedule your cancellation and reach the end of your current contract period, you’re automatically transitioned to a pay-as-you-go plan.

Your payment is nonrefundable. Stripe subscriptions are only offered on an annual commitment basis. By subscribing, you agree to pay for the subscription fee and any incurred overage fees through the annual term. We don’t offer refunds (prorated or otherwise) if you cancel before the end of your current term.

How does pricing work for a subscription to a Stripe product?

All of our subscriptions require an annual commitment. A subscription fee covers your use of the product up to your selected product usage entitlement for your current term. There may also be overage fees for any volume beyond your product usage entitlement. To learn more about these fees, see Stripe Pricing.

What is a product usage entitlement?

A product usage entitlement is the designated amount of usage that you selected when signing up for your subscription plan. This is the amount of product usage included as part of the subscription fee you pay. If you go over this amount, you’re subject to overage fees in addition to your subscription fee.

What are overage fees?

Overage fees are additional fees incurred if you go over your product usage entitlement. We only charge overage fees on usage beyond your selected product usage entitlement. The following examples illustrate typical overage fees:

  • Stripe Billing example: If your selected product usage entitlement is $100,000 USD per month, and you process $150,000 USD in a given month, you’re charged 0.67% on the additional $50,000 USD at the end of the month.
  • Stripe Tax example: If your entitlement is 1,000 transactions per month and you process 1,200 transactions, you’re charged $0.48 USD per transaction on the additional 200 transactions at the end of the month.

When will I be charged and what will my bill look like?

You’ll be charged your recurring subscription fee when your subscription starts, and again at the start of every subsequent billing period thereafter (this aligns with whichever plan you selected). You’ll be charged for any overage fees at the end of the month that they were incurred.

For example, if you purchase the annual contract for Stripe Billing with $100,000 USD in product usage entitlement that starts on September 15, 2024, at 00:00 UTC:

  • Term: Your committed contract term with Stripe will be September 15, 2024, at 00:00 UTC to September 14, 2025, at 23:59 UTC.
  • Subscription fee: You’ll owe a total of $7,440 USD plus applicable taxes to use Stripe Billing for the year, billed in monthly subscription fee installments of $620 USD plus applicable taxes each month (i.e., your subscription fee). The subscription fee is billed at the start of the subscription, and then every month on the same date thereafter. In this case, Stripe would charge you $620 USD plus applicable taxes on September 15, October 15, and so on.
  • Overage fee: Overage fees only apply on volume beyond your selected product usage entitlement (e.g., $100,000 USD per month). Stripe bills overage fees at the end of the month that they’re incurred. For example, if your monthly usage from September 15 to October 14 is $150,000 USD, your bill on October 15 would be:
    • An overage fee charge of $335 USD ($50,000 USD volume beyond product usage entitlement multiplied by the 0.67% overage rate), plus applicable taxes for your overages incurred for September 15 through October 14
    • The monthly subscription fee of $615 USD plus applicable taxes for the upcoming month (October 15 through November 14)

How will I be charged?

Via your Stripe account balance. Standard terms and conditions related to paying with your Stripe account balance apply. We’re working on adding other ways for you to pay in the future.

What is the minimum contractual commitment?

All of our subscription plans require an annual commitment. Your annual contract starts at 00:00 UTC on the day after you sign up, and ends one year later. After you sign up for a subscription, you’re responsible for paying for the entire year, even if you schedule a cancellation during your current term.

If you’re looking for something more flexible, we have pay-as-you-go pricing plans.

Does my subscription automatically renew?

Yes, all of our subscription plans automatically renew on the anniversary date for an additional one-year term. If you don’t want to automatically renew, you need to schedule a cancellation of your subscription before the auto-renew date, as set forth in our Subscription Cancellation Policy.

I didn’t mean to cancel my subscription—how do I resubscribe?

If you scheduled a subscription cancellation by accident, you can undo this at any time before the contract renewal date:

  • Navigate to the Dashboard settings page.
  • Click on Your plans.
  • Find the plan you want to resubscribe to.
  • If your plan is scheduled to be canceled, you can undo it by clicking Revert cancellation below your cancellation information and then confirming it. If your cancellation has already occurred, you need to resubscribe by clicking View plans and following the steps to subscribe.

After it’s reinstated, your subscription automatically renews on the original auto-renew date (your one-year contract anniversary).

Can I upgrade or downgrade my plan?

You can upgrade your plan at any time. The plan will be effective at the start of your next billing period. For example, if you’re charged on the 15th of every month, and you upgrade your plan on October 20, the new upgraded price and usage entitlement is applied effective November 15.

You can’t downgrade your plan below your initial subscription plan during the contract period. For example, if you sign up for the plan with $250,000 USD in Billing volume, you can upgrade to the $500,000 USD Billing volume tier, but can’t downgrade to the $100,000 USD Billing volume tier during the contract period. You can schedule a downgrade to the $100,000 USD tier to go into effect for the next annual contract period.

To downgrade:

  • Navigate to the Dashboard settings page.
  • Click on Your plans.
  • Find the plan you want to change and click Manage plan.
  • Click View plans to see the options available.
  • Choose a new option from the options provided and follow the prompt to finalize.

Do you offer monthly plans?

Currently we only offer annual plans that are paid monthly. If you’re looking for something more flexible, we have pay-as-you-go pricing plans.

What if I forget to pay or my payment fails?

Stripe reserves the right to temporarily suspend your access to services if you fail to pay or are in violation of our standard terms.

If I pre-paid, will I get a prorated refund when I cancel?

We don’t offer prorated refunds when you pre-pay because we only offer our subscriptions on an annual commitment basis. By subscribing, you agree to pay for the subscription fee and any incurred overage fees. We don’t offer refunds (prorated or otherwise) if you schedule a cancellation before the end of your current term.

What taxes are due on my subscription purchase?

We estimate the annual taxes to be collected based on current rates at checkout. Taxes and product taxability rates are subject to change. If you don’t see tax at checkout, there might be self-assessment requirements in your jurisdiction.

Can I get a custom subscription-based price?

Custom pricing is available for companies with large payments volume, high-value transactions, or unique business models.
