Current international definitions of sexual violence are broad, encompassing sexual slavery, enforced prostitution, forced pregnancy, enforced sterilization or any other forms of sexual violence of comparable gravity that may include indecent assault, trafficking, inappropriate medical examinations and strip searches. The purpose of this essay is to trace the motivations behind acts of sexual violence in conflict, revealing that sexual violence in conflict is rooted not only in the socio-cultural structure of society but the economic conditions as well. This essay will employ theories from feminist and political economists to bridge both factors and find how these two conditions are interrelated. From the analysis, this essay will proceed to briefly explore the efforts made by the United Nations in stopping sexual violence in conflict and criticize these efforts for not tackling the issue of sexual violence in conflict in a more multi-dimensional way albeit by restructuring socio-cultural and economic conditions.
